Job Title: Audio Visual (AV) Technician
Working Hours: 40 Hours (10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.)
Overview:
The AV Technician is responsible for the integration, installation, and maintenance of audio-visual systems within the museum’s operational environment. This role requires an individual who is methodical, self-driven, and capable of managing tasks independently while serving as a technical lead during special events.
Work Objectives & Responsibilities:
Routine Tasks:
- Power on temporary and permanent exhibits and perform daily inspection walkthroughs to ensure all AV technology is operating properly.
- Prepare exhibits for early or late visits, outside of normal operating hours.
- Assist in the installation of projectors, monitors, and other AV equipment.
- Replace projector bulbs when necessary.
- Perform routine system maintenance.
- Maintain accurate equipment inventory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
On-Demand Tasks:
- Setups for Meetings & Presentations:
- Configure classrooms, conference spaces, and other areas for meetings, staff training (including laptop setups), video conferencing, portable sound systems, and audio recording.
- Museum Theater Support:
- Set up captioning equipment.
- Adjust audio levels for both the theater and live-stream audiences.
- Configure camera views for live-streaming and recording.
- Assist with setting up PowerPoint presentations.
- Premier Film Screenings:
- Collaborate with outside contractors for special event setups.
- Video Conferencing/Streaming:
- Set up and support hybrid video conferencing/streaming programs.
- Provide assistance to museum staff with video conferencing as needed.
- Audio/Video Recording:
- Manage client recordings.
- Reformat museum recordings for event stakeholders and other departments.
- Special Events Support:
- Provide AV support before/after hours, on weekends, and for events at the museum’s Bowie, MD facility.
- Assist outside AV contractors with initial setups and during events.
- Operate robotic cameras and manage video switch operation.
- Exhibit Installations:
- Assist with planning, installation, and post-implementation management of AV systems during transitions between temporary exhibits (which typically run 2-3 years) and new exhibits.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in AV systems integration or service, with the following skills and certifications:
- 3-5 years of experience with audio visual systems integration or service.
- Driven, methodical, and focused, with strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently without close supervision.
- CTS certification or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to act as technical lead for special events.
- Experience operating video switchers (SDI, NDI).
- Experience mixing live sound using digital mixing consoles.
- Experience supporting hybrid video conference meetings.
- Proficiency in reading and following AV system flow diagrams and support documentation.
- Excellent computer, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong multi-tasking skills and the ability to meet project deadlines.
- Live event experience is a plus.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting audio DSPs (e.g., Biamp, QSC, Clearone) is a plus.
- Familiarity with Dante and AVOIP systems is a plus.
Working Conditions:
- This role may require work during evenings, weekends, and outside normal business hours to support special events and exhibit installations.
- Occasional travel to the museum’s Bowie, MD facility is expected.
- The position requires flexibility in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
