Reporting to the Learning Resource Center Manager, writing tutors provide academic assistance in all stages of the writing process across all college disciplines as appropriate and serve as models for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs of successful learners. Assistance may include reviewing class material, support during writing sessions, reviewing papers in the drafting stage, and providing guidance and thoughtful support to any learning barriers.

This position requires a professional with excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively use technology to enhance tutoring sessions. Successful candidates will have thorough knowledge and understanding of several citation styles, including MLA, APA, and potentially Chicago Manual Style. Applicants who can tutor specific content of additional subjects/courses such as Communications, Education, History, Humanities, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology are highly desired.

Successful tutors employ a holistic approach to student success, bring passion and enthusiasm to the Tutoring Centers, and are collaborative with students, faculty, and colleagues. They work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, gender identities, language groups, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide tutor assistance in appropriate courses in one-on-one and small group settings.
  2. Provide drop/walk-in, classroom, and/or appointment-based tutoring services either in-person or virtually in a fair and equitable manner.
  3. Maintain scheduled working hours at both physical campus or through virtual appointments based on semesterly scheduling.
  4. Maintain records and data of tutoring sessions, programming information, and other aspects of the Tutoring Center in accordance with Tutoring Center policies and needs.
  5. Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty.
  6. Assist or take the lead in the creation, development, and implementation of programming events, such as workshops, presentations, and seminars on specific subject topics as well as general learning strategies.
  7. Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters.
  8. Complete and submit all required forms (e.g., time sheets, evaluations, questionnaires distributed at workshops).
  9. Adhere to all Tutoring Center policies, procedures, and processes as detailed both in the Tutoring Center Handbook and by the Learning Resource Center Manager.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s or Doctoral degree in relevant field.
  2. Experience with tutoring or teaching high school or college students preferred.
  3. Experience working with historically underserved student populations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate effectively with others.
  5. Experience and competency with technologies, including: Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook, Google Drive, and Learning Management Systems such as Canvas.
