Overview
The Vice President, Public Relations, under the direction of the Chief Public Affairs Officer, provides leadership in the creation and implementation of integrated communication programs that advances the Fairview brand and achieves defined organizational business objectives. This position partners directly with key internal and external audiences, including Fairview’s senior leadership team, employees, physicians, media, donors, strategic partners and other critical relationships.
The Vice President, Public Relations has accountability for internal and external communication efforts and leads an interdisciplinary team consisting of experienced internal communication, media relations, social media and change management professionals. The team focuses on helping internal (employees and providers) and external (general, public, civic/religious organizations, legislators, donors, etc) stakeholders understand the value of the MHealth Fairview brand and business strategy through effective and efficient communications using earned and owned channels of communication. The Vice President works at the direction of the Chief Public Affairs Officer and is accountable for ensuring effective development of insights, strategies, communications plans and evaluation measurements for all work, managing strategic vision and tactical excellence.
Responsibilities Job Description
Partner with the Chief Public Affairs Officer to develop short and long-term communications plans, guide ELT in communications planning:

Attend ELT meetings, huddles, committees as assigned (as rep for CPAO)

Represent system leadership at enterprise-wide functions including moderating town halls, webinars, and gatherings

Provide strategic communication, crisis management and reputation management support to CPAO and ELT

Develop and execute comprehensive, tactical plans to tell the M Health Fairview story publicly

Develop, coordinate and execute internal communications and change management plans to ensure alignment of organizational strategy across the joint clinical enterprise

Develop and execute Crisis Management plans

Serve as an executive-level adviser on communications planning
-
Take operational and clinical plans and ‘bring them to life’, articulate strategy
Provide cross-functional, enterprise-wide executive leadership to service line, domain, and department executives

Establish and maintain trust and partnership with Executive Leadership Team

Provide executive communications strategic support to system leadership regarding strategic system goals and objective.

Provide executive oversight of Communications aspects of EPMO processes and procedures

Oversee and direct the strategy and implementation of cross functional communications activities.
Develop & execute strategies to protect M Health Fairview and Fairview brand reputation with internal and external audiences

Develop thoughtful strategies to proactively position M Health Fairview (playing offense); and protect the reputation of the brand and our leaders.

Develop and implement a system POV on media responses and positioning of senior leaders

Think/act quickly in this context.Build and sustain an engagement and influencer strategy to create positive public opinion
Build/advance strong relationships with local (and national) news media

Create and sustain lasting relationships with local reporters to ensure our views/facts are fairly represented in their reporting.

Create strategies/recommendations on how/when our executive leaders should connect with reporters.

Brief senior leaders for key media moments; accompany to key media interviews for follow-up
Serve as M Health Fairview’s on-the-record/on-camera spokesperson with news media
- Represent M Health Fairview with print and broadcast reporters as determined and when an on-the-record or on-camera spokesperson is needed.
Supervise the development, management and execution of M Health Fairview stories in earned and owned media, print and broadcast media, as well as social media platforms

Development of content strategies, content plans, specific story pitches and media measurement across internal and external channels

Regular reputation measurement and management
Build a team capable of building, protecting and advancing the organization’s narrative throughout our transformation (and beyond)

Includes hiring, talent development, operating models

Collaborate with internal leaders at Fairview, UM Physicians, and the University of Minnesota Medical School

Partnering with/leading external consultants (e.g., PR agencies, thought leaders)
Direct the creation and execution of multimedia projects

Draft scripts, story boards, and strategy briefs for multimedia projects

Hire and manage internal production teams and external production agencies
-
Coordinate strategic messaging across Executive Leadership Team and supporting staff
Oversee the strategic and executional work of managers and junior staff of nearly 20 FTEs supporting

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism (or related field) is required
Experience
-
10+ years’ experience managing/leading corporate reputation in complex, highly visible situations

Recent (last 2-3 years) experience advising enterprise-level CEO, C-level leaders on a regular (e.g., weekly, monthly) basis

Strong, proven experience in orchestrating crisis management and corporate affairs programs
-
Deep understanding of local news media, government leaders (federal, state, county), and local political dynamics
-
Recent experience as an internal leader at an enterprise company (not an agency) is required
