Capstone Design Coordinator Job Summary Job Summary: The primary responsibility of the Capstone Design Coordinator is the recruitment and management of industry-sponsored projects for the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Capstone Design program. Industry-sponsored projects form the basis of the Capstone Design program in mechanical engineering, providing students with the opportunity to engage with an industrial sponsor during the final year of their undergraduate degree program. Recruitment of industry-sponsored projects includes conducting outreach initiatives and marketing efforts to ensure the continued growth of the department's industry-sponsored design program. Management of industry-sponsored projects includes assisting prospective sponsors in defining appropriate project scope and objectives, facilitating company-student communication, mitigating any challenges that may arise during the project sponsorship, and ensuring a timely hand-off of project deliverables. Overall, the goal of Capstone Design Coordinator and the Department of Mechanical Engineering is achieving a high level of sponsor and student satisfaction at the completion of the program. More about the Capstone Design Program : The Capstone Design program is a two-semester sequence required of all senior undergraduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Working in teams of four-to-six students, capstone participants undertake a design challenge to meet the needs of a project sponsor (industry, academic, or competition). Teams follow a rigorous design process including: identification of user needs, development of design specifications, concept generation, analytical design analysis, detailed design, prototyping, and testing. Teams are expected to demonstrate a working prototype by the end of the two-semester sequence. Past industrial projects have been sponsored by companies in a variety of industries including aerospace, medical devices, automotive, mining, and energy. Responsibilities Specific responsibilities include:1. Engage stakeholders (students, instructors, industry sponsors, and College/University) to ensure the successful operation of the Capstone Program through its sponsored projects.2. Work with industry partners to identify and scope projects that meet the requirements of the Capstone program.3. Develop relationships with local and national companies and alumni to increase the number of industry-sponsored Capstone projects.4. Interface with industry partners throughout the execution of Capstone projects. Address any problems that come up to help to ensure successful interactions between students and companies.5. Interface with faculty instructors to ensure good alignment of industry-sponsored project objectives and Capstone learning objectives. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Specific areas of expertise may be preferred by departments. This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
