Position Summary:

This voluntary internship opportunity is with our Public Housing Department. The Housing Authority has 5 Public Housing sites throughout the County. Those sites house different populations such as families with children, elderly and disabled, and individuals with disabilities. The goal of this internship is to assist the VP of Property Operations, and the Asset Managers with their daily tasks, such as rent collection, filing paperwork, and responding to tenant needs. Additionally, the intern would work with our Resident Services Coordinator to assist tenants with daily living skills, and plan resident events.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist with tenant communication, including notices, newsletters, and updates
  • Assist Asset Managers with maintaining tenant files and housing application records.
  • Assist the Resident Services Coordinator in creating and planning resident and family events for all sites.
  • Shadow and observe the Resident Services Coordinator in assisting residents with daily living skills.
  • Support the Asset Managers in gathering necessary documents from applicants, like ID, birth certificate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Public Housing staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Willingness to learn about the Housing Authority and our Public Housing Department.
  • Ability to work with and serve a diverse population and relate to individuals at all socioeconomic levels
  • Ability to solve problems on a daily basis.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Requires a high degree of motivation, self-direction, and the ability to operate independently with supervision.
  • Requires excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to use the computer and various software to perform responsibilities efficiently.

Education and Experience:

Enrolled in an accredited college or university, obtaining a degree in social services or a related field is preferred.

A valid driver's license.

Key Competencies:

Independent decision-making skills and experience handling and resolving problems using skills gained through social work, community organization work, or similar types of experience are required. Ability to maintain effective relationships and analyze situations to identify problems, offer solutions, and communicate with different people in various situations.

Work Environment:

  • Work is principally sedentary but may involve some physical exertion, such as kneeling, crouching, or lifting to obtain files and records, and eyestrain from working with computers and other office equipment.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for up to eight hours at a time while performing work duties.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, push, and pull in the performance of office-related duties.
  • Must be able to use fingers bilaterally and unilaterally to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 30 pounds when needed.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions in an environment that sometimes includes increased stress levels.
