Description
The Communications Officer receives calls for assistance from the public and dispatches appropriate public safety personnel, and maintains a variety of Departmental records.
Examples of Duties
Applicants will be disqualified if they have a felony conviction, a family violence conviction, current illegal drug use, or tattoos/branding on the head, face, or ears. Tattoos to the neck/behind the ear will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Description
The Communications Officer receives calls for assistance from the public and dispatches appropriate public safety personnel, and maintains a variety of Departmental records.
Examples of Duties
- Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communication traffic for emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Receives and screens all incoming telephone calls from the public.
- Categorizes and prioritizes calls.
- Dispatches appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations.
- Maintains a continuous log for incoming telephone and radio calls.
- Logs incoming calls for all participating agencies.
- Assists with records management functions as needed.
- Monitors and routes incoming messages from the state computer network.
- Enters and removes information to the GCIC database; validates information as required.
- Receives cash bonds.
- Requests sign, street, and traffic signal repairs from the Public Works Department as necessary.
- Informs upcoming shift of events occurring during the previous shift.
- Assists the public by providing directions and information.
- Communicates with other agencies to obtain and relay information.
- High School Diploma or GED;
- Six (6) months of experience in a related field;
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
- Valid State of Georgia Driver's License;
- Georgia POST Communications Officer Certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months.

- Vision - An annual exam and materials benefit (frames/lenses or contacts) are provided through EyeMed.
- Retirement - Employees contribute 3% pretax and the City of Statesboro contributes 9%. Employees are vested after five years of service. Non-public safety employees are eligible for full retirement after 30 years of service. Public safety employees are eligible for full retirement at 55 years of age and 25 years of service.
- 457(b) Deferred Compensation Program - Through Nationwide, employees can set aside additional pre-tax / post-tax money towards retirement through investing contributions in the stock market.
- Flexible Spending Accounts - Employees can set aside pre-tax dollars to assist with qualifying medical expenses or dependent daycare expenses.
- Life Insurance - Basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in the amount of one times salary rounded up to the next thousand dollars is provided at no cost to the employee. Also, basic dependent life insurance at $10,000 is provided for covered family members.
- Voluntary Term Life Insurance - New employees are guaranteed at least $150,000 (not to exceed five times their annual salary). Employees are offered up to $50,000 of spouse life insurance and $10,000 of dependent life insurance.
- Long-Term Disability - City-paid long-term disability insurance pays 50% of the employee's salary if the employee is out of work for 90 days due to sickness.
- Short-Term Disability - Employees can select short-term disability insurance and receive 66.67% of their salary if they are out of work for seven or more days.
- Holidays - Employees receive 12 days of holiday pay annually.
- Vacation and Sick Leave - New employees earn 80 hours of vacation leave and 96 hours of sick leave annually.
- Health Center - Employees and their families (if the families are covered by the City's health insurance plan) receive complimentary access to the health center. The center provides medical access for routine checkups, urgent care needs, and chronic condition management.
- Fitness Center - Employees and their families receive complimentary access to the fitness center on a 24/7 basis annually. The center is staffed with an athletic trainer and personal trainers.
