This position is responsible for building partnerships with community agencies to provide, coordinate, and increase awareness of library services.
Major Duties
Provides customer assistance to internal and external patrons.
Promotes library services through outreach activities such as school and community visits.
Promotes library collections, technology, and services through presentations, programs, and displays.
Instruct patrons in the use of library and information resources.
Plans and implements programs for adults and teens.
Conducts tours for groups and organizations.
Assists patrons in selecting, locating and using library resources.
Provides readers' advisory assistance to patrons.
Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences as necessary.
Reads professional development books and articles.
Participates on various committees as requested.
Assists in the generation of research aids and in the creation of research lists.
Performs collection development duties; selects books and other resources; evaluates collection for outdated materials.
Files and shelves materials.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Qualifications
Knowledge of library science principles and practices.
Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
Knowledge of library collections and materials.
Knowledge of reference resources, popular reading materials, and online databases.
Knowledge of review media and collection development tools.
Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of software.
Skill in problem solving.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited university.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Supplemental Information
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: ?The Head of Reference and Technical Services assigns work in terms of general instructions. ? Work is spot-checked upon completion for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of results.

GUIDELINES: ?Guidelines include standard reference practices and city and library policies and procedures. ?These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: ?The work consists of varied duties in providing reference services to library patrons. ?Budgetary and time constraints contribute to the complexity of the work. ?

SCOPE AND EFFECT: ?The purpose of this position is to provide reference services to patrons. ? Successful performance contributes to the effective and efficient use of library services and fosters a positive image of the library.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: ?Contacts are typically with other library employees, employees of other libraries, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: ?Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: ?The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. ?The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: ?The work is typically performed in a library.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: ?None.
