Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Associate I for its Library Administrative Offices & Services Center. This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Acts as an assistant to the supervisor. Provides customer service to patrons by developing and delivering age appropriate programs and readers' advisory. Promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in the use of collection and computers. This position is a support position at Library Headquarters. This individual trains branch youth personnel, builds and maintains KidZones and Playscapes and other youth spaces at PL locations and develops systemwide program plans for seasonal and yearly programs.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One year of experience in library or related services. Experience working with children & teens and adults in a library. Supervisory experience preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

Essential Functions

- Assists Youth Services Coordinator with youth program planning and implementation
- Assists Digital Media Coordinator with graphic design tasks, maintaining social media pages and other tasks
- Assists Adult Programs Coordinator with adult program planning and implementation
- Conducts Early Literacy programs
- Connects with schools to schedule library promotional visits
- Attends outreach events, representing NPL to the community & schools
- Develops fliers and other promotional materials
- Conducts training modules on child development and best practices
- Supervises volunteers, interns and NEL's
- Inventories Storytime kits, KinderSTEM kits, YOUmedia rigs
- Assist with coordinating Special Events
- Research grants. Writes grant applications
- Plans & promotes Summer Reading Program
- Manage database for Summer Reading Program
- Ability to coordinate storytime kits for a multi-branch system
- Creates PowerPoints presentations
- Research topics for reports and other projects
- Edits reports and writes award applications
- Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports
- Ability to prioritize tasks
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Promotes the concept of the Family Place Library in Norfolk
- Attends Family Place Training in New York
