HIRING: Technical Director Immediate Start
Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts, a professional theatre company, is seeking a Technical Director for immediate hire through September 2025, with the possibility of extension or permanent employment.
The Technical Director/Lead Carpenter for Thingamajig Theatre Company at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of all productions and events, including sound, lighting, video equipment, and overall technical operations. This includes managing technical crews, coordinating equipment setup, and making real-time decisions to maintain quality during a broadcast or performance. They will also assist lighting, sound, or projection designers with setting up systems for productions or events. As the only carpenter on staff, they are solely responsible for executing the build of every production.
Thingamajig Theatre Company has operated for 15 years with a Technical Director/Lead Carpenter and a crew of volunteers. Typically, three mainstage shows are built for a summer repertory season, along with one children's theater production, a fundraiser, and two special events. During the winter season, three to four shows are produced, along with numerous low-tech events.
Members of Thingamajig Theatre Company value artistic integrity, creative problem-solving, and working with a group of like-minded individuals. The position allows for autonomy, with no set hours, only event deadlines. The individual will create their own schedule, schedule volunteer assistance, keep up with production deadlines, and work alongside fellow production artists. A successful candidate must enjoy working with volunteers and be a team player.
The theatre space is a 150-seat black box with a thrust stage configuration and a versatile lobby stage for special events. The theatre has a fully equipped workshop.
The town of Pagosa Springs is a beautiful rural mountain town known for its hot springs and mountain trails. Half of our audience members come from the community, while the other half are tourists. Our performers and designers are recruited through a national audition process, and we take pride in working with talented artists.
The next show opens on February 28th, 2025, and candidates who can start immediately would take on this small build. The summer season begins rehearsals around May 15th, with all sets completed by that time for three summer musicals, followed by special events and set maintenance.
We are looking to hire someone ASAP until September 15th, with the intent to keep the person full-time if both parties are satisfied. The starting annual salary is $42,000, with $25,000 from February 1 to September 15. A room in company housing is included.
Company housing is located a few miles from the theatre and consists of a furnished house with 12 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, and onsite laundry. During the summer months, the house typically hosts 14-22 actors, designers, and interns. In the off-season, the Technical Director may be the only resident, with a private room and shared bathroom.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and actively participate in all aspects of the summer season build, ensuring high-quality scenic construction.
- Oversee the maintenance and operation of all technical aspects of the theatre, including scenic elements, lighting, sound, and rigging.
- Serve as the primary carpenter, responsible for set builds and installations.
- Manage and maintain theatre facilities, tools, and inventory.
- Work collaboratively with designers, directors, and production teams to bring artistic visions to life.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices in all technical areas.
Qualifications:
- Advanced level carpentry skills are a must.
- Strong experience in scenic construction, rigging, lighting, and sound.
- Ability to manage timelines and lead technical crews effectively.
- Problem-solving skills and adaptability in a fast-paced production environment.
- Professional theatre experience preferred.
