Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for potential Media Specialists for the school year 2025 - 2026. These candidates will work under the direction of the school principal, plans, and administers the school's library media program, plans, and provides direct instruction to students, trains school staff, and manages library media center material, facilities, and equipment. The media specialist communicates the school library media program to administrators, staff, students, parents, and the broader community.

DUTIES:
  • Provide instruction to students in the area of information literacy skills, including information retrieval, evaluating the relevancy and accuracy of resources, and use of online databases.
  • Schedule classes throughout the day to inform students and teachers about resources, references, and technology that can be used to reinforce and support the instructional program.
  • Correlate a course of study for each grade-level with resources of the media center.
  • Provide leadership for infusion of technologies into the school instructional program.
  • Actively participates in school-based, cluster, and system- wide meetings to plan the development and implementation of school library media services and programs.
  • Provide instruction to students in various computer applications for word processing, data organization, presentations.
  • Evaluate, select, and maintain a collection of materials from print to the newest information technologies that support the school-wide curriculum and are appropriate to varying levels of student ability and interests.
  • Co-plan and co-teach with content area teachers to incorporate research skills into the content units.
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive program for staff development, focusing on media instruction.
  • Plan and coordinate a comprehensive program of instruction for students and staff encompassing information technologies such as Global Access, research learning hubs, networked CD-ROMs, software, TV studios as well as traditional resources.
  • Provide leadership for implementation of Research Learning Hub and other information technologies.
  • Create an environment which encourages all students to utilize information resources and become lifelong readers.
  • Maintain accurate records as required for state, county, and school reports.
  • Plan an annual budget for acquisition of media center resources and telecommunications services.
  • Manage the media center collection, including repairing and cataloging materials.
  • Prepare short- and long-range plans for keeping the media collection current.
  • Communicate the school library media program to the broader school community including parents, businesses, and public libraries through meetings, articles, and special programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school library media, with media generalist specialization and course work in curriculum and special education. Completion of a practicum or two years of successful teaching or two years of successful media-related experience.
  • Meets Maryland state certification requirements for Educational Media (audiovisual/library) Generalist (Level II).
  • Thorough knowledge of DCPS Policies and Procedures for school library media programs.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices and understanding of the teaching/learning process.
  • Knowledge of current instructional and research technologies and the ability to integrate these into the library media program and throughout the curriculum.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, students and community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
