The Technical Director of Pipes/Plastics products and systems is a senior-level position responsible for overseeing all aspects of a water distribution system's piping infrastructure, including planning, design, construction, maintenance, repairs, and replacements, ensuring the reliable delivery of clean water while adhering to NSF standards; this role typically involves directing or interacting with a team of engineers and technicians, collaborating with other departments to optimize water system operations.

The position is accountable for accelerating organizational performance through the effective ownership and implementation of solutions that drive innovation, efficiency, consistency, scalability, and setting-up best practices and measurement tools. It involves active representation of NSF and Plastic Pipes testing services in front of industry, customers and potential regulatory groups.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Supervision: Identification and mentorship of key technical talent across the Laboratory Division leading to the creation and development/propagation of expertise and capabilities in support areas for our client base for laboratory services. This role is expected to be client, regulatory and industry-facing to understand evolving technical needs and to promote NSF capabilities.
  • Acceptance of Manufacturers' Data (AMD), large pipe testing, forensic and or failure analysis AND complex pipe testing protocols design.
  • Ensures standard operating procedures are implemented, partnering with the division and functions to ensure systems, tools and processes achieve absolute consistency in service offerings and operational excellence.
  • Ensures identifying and successfully implementing transformational initiatives and ownership of capability transfer across the NA Labs and the laboratory division where appropriate.
  • Ensure best practices are identified, measured and effectively employed across the division
  • Engage with Leaders, Laboratory Division, QA and IT to ensure standardization of the technical expertise where appropriate or needed.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Establishes and maintains critical relationships with internal and external stakeholders including customers, employees, communities, governments, outside vendors and partners, and others as required to achieve global strategies and objectives. Collaborating with other departments within the organization, as well as external stakeholders like contractors, regulatory agencies, and community groups. including names like, ANSI, ASTM, PPI along with other regulatory or industry groups.
  • Communicates throughout the organization promptly with leaders, team members, customers and partners
  • Work with procurement to establish key vendor relationships/partnerships that support an increase in collaboration; reduction in vendors; reduction in consumable variability; improved vendor service levels and leveraging the NSF volume spend to reduce costs (instrumentation and supplies).
  • Strategic Planning: Developing plans for water/piping cliental infrastructure upgrades, expansions, and replacements, considering factors like population growth and water demand.
  • Project Management: Leading the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of new water piping projects, ensuring compliance with project budgets and timelines.
  • Data Analysis: Utilizing data analysis tools to identify trends in water usage, leak patterns, and system performance to inform decision-making.
  • Travel: Maintain a physical presence in pipe industry-related labs at NSF (10-20% travel)

Qualifications

  • Intimate knowledge of laboratory operations, safety, QA, laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and testing procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, including selecting and developing talent, building trust, coaching team members and managing performance resulting in high performing teams
  • A minimum of five years people leadership (supervisory) experience.
  • Experience in continuous improvement principles, tools and techniques.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Extensive experience in water distribution systems, including piping design, construction, and maintenance
  • Strong understanding of relevant water quality regulations and standards
  • Proven project management skills with experience managing complex infrastructure projects
  • Leadership abilities to manage and motivate a team of technical staff
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Collaborative with a global mindset, engages with internal and external stakeholders across regions, divisions and functions to achieve business results
  • Strong team leadership and ability to motivate multi-cultural staff in a matrix managed structure.
  • Ability to develop and deliver organizational messages using various communication modes for transparency and clarity of messages with teams in a consistent and timely manner

Education:
  • Masters degree or bachelors degree, or equivalent experience in chemistry, microbiology, toxicology, or related field
