INTRODUCTION

This position will generally work a regular schedule of Tuesday - Saturday, at the Main Tillamook library in downtown Tillamook.

If you have a passion for serving the public, one or more years of education past the high school level or at least 6 months of experience working in a clerical setting, we would love to see you apply.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE LEVELS

The Library Assistant 1 performs general office clerical work and in addition, participates in limited portions of library functions.

Examples of Essential Duties
(Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples. Any one position may not perform all listed tasks.)
  • Provide routine check in/out service for books, periodicals, and other materials.
  • Issue borrower cards.
  • Pull up daily list of requests from other libraries in the Oceanbooks system.
  • Retrieve items from collection and process transactions.
  • Package materials for courier pick up.
  • Receive boxes from other libraries in the Oceanbooks system, sort contents and label for local patrons.
  • Shelve books by call number or according to clearly stated library protocol.
  • Place books on reserve and notify borrowers when requested items are available.

Typical Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of general office procedures, methods, and practices.
  • Knowledge of limited areas of library methods and practices.
  • Skill in the use and minor maintenance of photocopiers, fiche readers, computer printers, and computers to access the Internet. Keyboarding skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively orally.
  • Able to courteously meet and deal with the public, co-workers, and staff at other facilities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Able to work independently in accordance with well-established policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
One year of education beyond the high school level or 6 months of clerical experience in any setting which gives exposure to office procedures, machines, and methods.
Supplemental Information
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Work is performed under the supervision of a Library Manager. After becoming acquainted with applicable guidelines, the employee can perform routine assignments with independence. The supervisor or a higher-level staff member is available to explain or clarify assignments.

GUIDELINES
Specific, detailed guidelines cover the work and are readily applied. Supervisory direction is sought when judgment, deviations from standard procedures or interpretations are necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing or recurring activities such as crouching, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing loaded book trucks, lifting and carrying items up to 30 pounds; and climbing ladders. Work involves everyday risks or discomforts typically associated with libraries, offices, and meeting rooms. Work areas are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated.
