QUALIFICATIONS:
•A valid Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education obtained through the South Dakota Department of
Education.
•Teaching experience (preferred).
•Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training
•Requirements to the above qualifications that the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Instructs classes in Intermediate classroom music so that students develop skills in singing, listening, and music
fundamentals, and participate with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Collaborates with principal and staff of assigned building to establish a workable class schedule
which insofar as possible accommodates the needs of each building.
•Teaches students to sing with a clear, free, in-tune sound.
•Identifies, diagnoses, and prescribes remediation for individual and group problems
singing.
•Builds and maintains a choir which presents a yearly performance of high musical quality
for the school and community in which the group is well-disciplined and makes a good appearance.
•Designs or selects and uses planned sequences of instruction for music reading and recorder.
•Matches activities and materials to individual and group skills and needs.
•Conducts interesting and well-paced classes, using a variety of instructional techniques, strategies,
and materials appropriate to the lesson.
•Collaborates with the support services team to develop Individual Education Program (IEP's).
•Ensures that instructional activities and materials are clearly related to District, school, and department
goals and objectives.
•Provides instruction based on designated instructional guides and lesson plans.
•Establishes and maintains an orderly and supportive classroom environment in which students are
actively participating and show respect for one another and for the teacher.
•Maximizes time when students are paying attention and working on tasks directly related to the subject
matter.
•Gives clear directions and makes sure students understand what to do before undertaking assignments.
•Assesses, keeps track of, and provides feedback often to students on their progress.
•Maintains accurate inventory records of sheet music, instruments, and equipment.
•Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with building administrators and staff to resolve
problems in a professional manner so that the concerns of all parties are considered.
•Collaborates with the band instructor(s) to further the total music program in each school.
•Perform other duties classroom teachers perform, such as recess, small group help (Walk to Read/Math),
and Parent/Teacher Conferences.
•Perform other duties assigned not mentioned above.
This position has the capability to be combined with another .5 position to make it full-time.
