Under general supervision is responsible for the direct provision of library services to all patrons; planning and presenting appropriate library programming; advising and assisting patrons in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources; conducting outreach to community venues actively promoting use of the library and library resources. Reports to Library Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the general public with information regarding library materials and equipment.
  • Maintains and selects library materials on the basis of established criteria and the needs of the users.
  • Promotes use of the library by the community.
  • Answers reference questions and performs readers' advisory services.
  • Prepares and presents programs regarding library services and materials to various age groups.
  • Maintains work records and prepares reports.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and selects materials.
  • Cataloging materials.
  • Solves routine classification and cataloging problems.
  • Reconciles differences in bibliographic records.
  • Trains staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.
  • Opens and/or closes the library on scheduled days following established opening and closing procedures.
  • Fulfills the responsibilities of the Library manager in their absence.
  • Assists customers with computer use and printing services.
  • Provides circulation services—checking in, and checking out, managing customers’ accounts, and placing holds.
  • Trains volunteers to read shelves and shelve materials.
  • Provides instruction for community classes and education offered at the library.
  • Uses the on-line catalog, print resources, internet websites, and online databases as reference tools.
  • Works with laptops and PCs, a variety of smaller data devices, copiers, craft equipment, and uses general clerical supplies.
  • Interacts and communicates effectively with the public, library staff and personnel from other libraries, and library vendors and volunteers.
  • Records reference and program statistics for monthly record keeping, and prepares monthly report for Library Manager.
  • Regular and prompt attendance is a requirement of the position.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Maintains knowledge of a wide variety of reference sources, authors, literature, publishers, publications, and library operations, philosophy, and policy.
  • Sets priorities, plans, coordinates, and organizes work.
  • Works effectively with a teamwork orientation in daily activities as well as addressing problems and unique situations.
  • Performs routine tasks as required, including but not limited to copying/filing documents, answering the telephone, working the front desk, sending/receiving faxes, and entering/retrieving computer data.
  • Plans and coordinates the Summer Reading Program with staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Skill in organizing and maintaining library filing systems.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Knowledge of fundamental public library principles, methods, materials, and practices.
  • Knowledge of cataloging principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic library reference tools and services.
  • Knowledge of professional library publications and the literature of librarianship.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to handle all physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to organize and direct volunteers.

Minimum Education, Certification and Experience Requirements:

Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university or obtain within six (6) months of hire. No substitution for education allowed.

Work includes prolonged sitting, standing and walking. Must be able to lift and move at least 40 pounds, with or without assistance. Must be able to perform carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling, and pushing activities, and must have clear speech, vision, and hearing acuity.
