Lecturer on Latin Language and Literature

The Department of the Classics seeks applications for a Lecturer on Latin Language and Literature. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. The lecturer will be responsible for four courses aimed primarily at undergraduates. Three of these courses will be advanced reading courses on, respectively, Ovid, Catullus, and the letters of Cicero and Pliny. The fourth course will be a survey of Latin literature in translation.

The successful candidate will join a thriving community of scholars and students of Greco-Roman culture and its reception. Lecturers are encouraged to participate in a wide range of programming and professional development opportunities within the department, the Ancient Studies initiative, the Mahindra Humanities Center, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning.

This position is for one year.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate in Classics or related discipline required by the time the appointment begins.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching is desired.

  1. Cover letter, including a description of the candidate’s teaching/advising philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which every student is encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas.
  2. Names and contact information of three to five referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. In the case of ABD candidates, dissertation advising referees should be asked by candidates to address the dissertation’s state of completion. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
