Job Description
Description: Hedgelan Consulting (Hedgelan) is seeking two full-time Library Technicians to support our client at the US Geological Survey (USGS) Library in Reston, Virginia and in Denver, Colorado. The required services to be provided include cataloging and collection management and scientific records archiving. Assistance under this task order supports the bibliographic records maintenance, inventory, processing materials into and out of the collection, shifting book and map collections, packing of materials as needed to achieve library collection consolidation objectives. Duties include but are not limited to processing materials into and out of the collection, shifting, shelving, and integrating collections, maintaining library catalog records, preparing inventories of archival materials, and preparing and packing library materials for transport, and maintaining statistical records on consolidation activities.
Minimum Educational/Experience Requirements:
- Associate degree from recognized college or technical institute with 16 credits in library science or computer science.
- Basic knowledge and some experience with word processing, electronic mail, spreadsheets, and other office automation products, including printers and scanners.
- Minimum of one year of experience in library services.
- Some knowledge of library techniques, systems, and procedures.
- Some knowledge of sources of reference and bibliographical materials.
- Ability to use and explain library facilities, including catalogs, and other reference aids.
- Ability to deal effectively with volunteers and non-professional staff in instructing them in use of library.
- Ability to present ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel of the institution. Team player.
- Self-motivated with positive attitude and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Desired Technical Skills
Experience or basic working knowledge with the following systems:
- ExLibris Alma Integrated Library System
- Online Computer Library Center’s national bibliographic utility (OCLC)
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
- Internet search engines
- FedEx online shipping tools
Functional Responsibilities:
- Access Services Support
- Cataloging and Collection Management Support
- Scientific Records Archiving
- Administer and maintain quality assurance plan.
- File or shelve collection materials.
- Circulate library materials.
- Discharge materials returned from circulation.
- Recall library materials.
- Retrieve library materials.
- Provide basic maintenance of equipment, shelving, file cabinets, moveable shelving, furniture and facilities, and report problems to the COR and IT Help Desk or Building Services, as appropriate.
- Maintain a safe and secure library.
- Support collection management.
- Process and prepare library materials for the collection.
- Maintain the USGS Library collection records and inventory in the serial and cataloging modules of the library staff catalog.
- Support the archiving of library materials and special collections.
Level of Exertion: Position does involve exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
Employment Requirements:
- Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug test and comply with all requirements of the company substance abuse policy.
