Summary: The Technical Writer supports the Production and Engineering departments by collaborating with management and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create, revise, and maintain technical documentation for wine cellar cooling units and wine racking systems. This includes SOPs, work instructions, forms, checklists, manuals, training materials, product sheets, specification labels, and compliance documentation.

This in-house position requires a strong ability to interpret engineering specifications, apply appropriate document templates, standards, style, and terminology, and ensure alignment with regulatory requirements. The writer will work closely with engineering, marketing, and customer service to ensure all documentation is clear, consistent, and user-friendly. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator is required to create technical illustrations for owner’s manuals and regulatory documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Technical Documentation Development
    • Research, write, edit, and maintain owner’s manuals, product spec sheets, labels, work instructions, and SOPs.
    • Ensure all documentation aligns with certification and regulatory standards.
    • Convert complex technical concepts into clear and concise user-friendly documentation.
    • Develop illustrations, diagrams, and infographics to support technical content.
    • Create marking and labeling documentation in compliance with safety requirements.
  • Cross Department Collaboration
    • Work closely with engineering to gather technical details and understand wine cellar cooling system functionalities.
    • Partner with marketing to ensure documentation meets brand guidelines and enhances the user experience.
    • Collaborate with customer service to refine FAQs, troubleshooting guides, and installation instructions.
    • Act as a liaison between management and departments to ensure accurate representation of procedures.
  • Quality Control & Compliance
    • Perform & create document quality control (QC) checks for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards.
    • Ensure good documentation practices (GDPs) are followed.
    • Maintain or create version control and documentation archiving procedures.
    • Update existing materials to meet new compliance requirements (e.g., UL 60335-2-89).
    • Support the certification process by preparing the necessary documentation for regulatory submissions.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Manage multiple documentation projects and prioritize workloads effectively.
    • Continuously improving documentation processes based on feedback from internal teams and end-users.
    • Perform other related tasks as needed by management.

 

 

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of technical writing experience, preferably in a manufacturing, engineering, or HVAC-related industry.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator (required) for creating technical illustrations and owner’s manual graphics.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience writing for UL, ETL, or other regulatory compliance documentation is a plus.
  • Familiarity with wine cellar cooling systems, refrigeration principles, or HVAC equipment is a plus.

 

Work Environment:

  • In-house position (no remote work).
  • Primarily a computer-based role; requires extended time working at a desk.
  • Collaboration with engineering, marketing, and customer service teams.

Education and Experience: 

  • 1–3 years of experience creating SOPs, work instructions, or product manuals in a manufacturing or technical environment.
  • Previous experience with engineering or marketing departments.
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Technical Writing, Communications, or a related field is a plus but not required.

 

Language Skills:
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and technically accurate documentation, including owner’s manuals, SOPs, and compliance documents.
  • Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings, including discussions with engineering, marketing, customer service, and regulatory teams.
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in both positive and challenging situations while ensuring alignment with technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Listens actively, asks for clarification when needed, and communicates effectively with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and cross-functional teams.

 

Reasoning Ability:
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply engineering specifications and regulatory guidelines
  • Ability to analyze technical information and convert it into clear, structured, and user-friendly documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Capable of resolving documentation inconsistencies and troubleshooting technical gaps using sound judgment and diplomacy.

 

Computer Skills:
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator (required) for creating technical illustrations.
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to use collaborative tools and version control systems for managing technical documents efficiently.
 Physical Demands:
  • This is a computer-based role requiring extended periods of typing, using a mouse, and reviewing digital documents.
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and engage in discussions with engineers and other departments.
  • Occasional hands-on interaction with products may be required for documentation purposes (e.g., verifying dimensions, labeling, or assembly steps).
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (e.g., handling printed manuals, sample components).
  • Requires wearing standard safety gear when interacting with production areas or testing environments.
