Under general supervision, write and edit copy, build out webpages, produce emails, send SMS messages, and coordinate review for content on a variety of channels. Assist in the development and delivery of engaging cross channel content while ensuring consistent user journeys across platforms. Respond sensitively to breaking news and rapidly developing conversations that can spread quickly (i.e., “go viral”) on social media without warning. Perform other duties as required.
This position plays a key role in executing the Aquarium’s content strategy across all channels: email marketing, websites, social media, SMS, print publications, and multi-platform advertising campaigns.
This Content Creator role is focused on Monterey Bay Aquarium's conservation, science, and advocacy narratives. They’ll help build a constituency for ocean conservation, activating audiences to join the Aquarium in addressing climate change and plastic pollution, advocating for a healthy global ocean, conserving wildlife like sea otters, protecting biodiverse ecosystems, and promoting sustainable seafood. This creator will contribute to projects in collaboration with stakeholders in the Aquarium’s Conservation & Science division, including the Global Ocean Conservation, US & California Policy, and Seafood Watch teams.

Core Activities:
Draft original and assigned copy including marketing and marine science content for web stories, marketing emails and e-newsletter blurbs, SMS messages and social media posts in accordance with Aquarium brand guidelines.
Edit content for understandability, grammar, and style in accordance with Aquarium brand guidelines including incorporating content feedback.
Craft responses to questions and comments in social media feeds, in direct messages, and on travel review sites and forums on their own and collaboratively with a variety of folks across the organization.
Post responses, conduct follow-up, and escalate as needed.
Post content on social channels using social media management tool and native social platforms.
Manage tasks in project management software.
Build emails using email service provider and extract email lists from database.
Conduct email test sends and gather and implement content feedback.
Generate reports on email and social performance.
Use content management systems (CMS) to implement requested content updates on website in English and Spanish. Build new pages as needed.
Conduct user acceptance testing of new website features.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
BA/BS in communications/marine science, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
2-3 years written or oral science communication experience
Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in an accurate, engaging and understandable way for the general public
Deep knowledge of marine biology, related to the Aquarium’s animal collection
Ability to write in a warm and engaging tone that matches Monterey Bay Aquarium’s brand voice and social media style
Ability to use good judgment, care and discretion when responding to sensitive topics in a high-visibility social media landscape, following Aquarium social care standards and protocols
Ability to work in enterprise software and on social media platforms. CMS, ESP, and marketing automation software experience a plus
Ability to ensure email messages are properly constructed to adhere to industry best practices; review messages for brevity while proofreading all emails for clarity, grammar, and spelling
Proven ability to prioritize, follow through, multi-task, pay attention to details, work within tight deadlines and manage time well
Show initiative, flexibility, and creativity
Ability to both work independently and to collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary creative team
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
