JOB SUMMARY

The Osceola Library System is seeking a dynamic, full-time Youth Services Librarian for the Poinciana Library.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, creative, and proactive. The Youth Services Librarian will design and implement engaging programs and services that inspire young patrons and support their parents, teachers, and caregivers. Responsibilities include delivering storytimes, creating programs for elementary and middle school students, and organizing events and classes for teens. The successful candidate will work closely with schools, local organizations, and community partners to promote library events and outreach efforts, building lasting relationships with families and fostering lifelong library engagement.

We are looking for someone with a strong knowledge of children’s and teen literature, a passion for fostering literacy, a deep interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), the humanities, and creative educational programming, and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for our multicultural community.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and deliver innovative programs for young patrons, including storytime, music and movement, STEAM workshops, book clubs, artistic expression, coding, and more.
  2. Assist children, parents, and caregivers in finding reading materials, conducting research, and providing guidance on utilizing library services.
  3. Collaborate with the youth services team to support system-wide events, attend team meetings, and offer leadership, guidance, and organizational support.
  4. Conduct outreach to schools and community organizations to promote library resources and services.
  5. Assist in the development and maintenance of library collections for children and teens, both in print and online.
  6. Contribute to the Summer Learning program and other seasonal initiatives.
  7. Explore and participate in grant opportunities, community partnerships, and innovative service projects.
  8. Document statistics and prepare reports about youth programming at the assigned branch.
  9. Participate in reference, circulation, and general branch supervision duties as needed.
  10. Create and maintain age-appropriate content for the library’s online platforms.
  11. Inform library patrons of rules of conduct as necessary, and enforce those rules when appropriate.
  12. May assume responsibility for overseeing library operations in the absence of management.
  13. Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. MLS (Master of Library Science) or MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) degree from an ALA-accredited program. Will consider an applicant as a Library Intern if currently enrolled in an MLS or MLIS degree program.
  2. Proven experience developing and delivering youth programming for diverse age groups.
  3. Strong communication and presentation skills.
  4. Creative problem-solver and confident professional with a strong commitment to customer service.
  5. Excellent technology skills, including experience with web-based platforms, digital resources, and STEAM education tools.
  6. Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently.
  7. Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) preferred, but not required.
  8. Strong decision-making skills and the ability to think strategically and collaboratively.
  9. Flexible schedule including nights, evenings, and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasionally up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  2. Ability to sit or stand for long periods and maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
