Job Title: Long-Term Substitute Elementary Music Teacher
Reports to: Academic Director
Employment Status: Part-Time (25-30 hours per week); Hourly non-exempt
Report to Work Dates: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in all weeks during which the program is in session, currently planned through May 30, 2025. There is a weekly meeting of elementary faculty from 3:30-4:30pm at which attendance is required.
Position Summary: Bixby School is currently seeking a long-term substitute Music teacher to deliver in-person instruction to students in Kindergarten-5th grades for the remainder of the current academic year, with the possibility of a permanent position for the 2025-26 school year.
Defining features of a Bixby music classroom include:
- Small class setting, with activities tailored to the students' needs and pacing
- Activities that arise from a student's own thinking/questioning are valued and responded to
- Help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments, music theory, and history (e.g. “Composer of the Month”)
- Plan, rehearse, and direct students in 2-3 live concerts: 5th grade Play, Winter Sing & Spring Concerts
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Daily
- Design and deliver curriculum, including preparation of all instructional materials and resources needed to effectively execute instructional plans
- Monitor and manage proper care and upkeep of all musical instruments
- Prepare and differentiate lessons and student learning experiences
- Differentiate instruction to implement accommodations and extensions
- Support students’ social-emotional and academic development
- Support the mission and core beliefs of Bixby School
- Model Bixby’s values of Respect, Responsibility and Empathy
- Report to work on all of the days during which the program in which the Employee is employed is in operation, as indicated on the school calendar, a copy of which has been delivered to the Employee.
- Participate in faculty meetings
- Communicate with families about the lessons and activities in your classroom (e.g. newsletter - Bixby Buzz, SeeSaw, Friday folders, etc.)
- Periodically/As Needed
- Document student growth and performance using authentic, mission-aligned evidence (e.g. student work, photos/videos, student reflections, observations, etc.)
- Respond to parent inquiries and participate in parent conferences
- Promptly and appropriately document student concerns, including academic, behavioral, physical, emotional or social; and notify the Head of School or other appropriate school administrator
- Maintain current knowledge of topics relevant to your classroom
- Participate in all-staff meetings and professional development/in-service activities
- Annually:
- Support the production of two Spring Concerts, one for K-2nd grade students and another for 3rd-5th grade students
- Contribute to student assessments and reports (Fall and Spring Student Reports; End of Year Reports, etc.)
- Such other duties as may be assigned from time to time
Qualification Requirements:
- Demonstrated passion for music and inspiring a love of music in children
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, or equivalent experience
- Strong instrumental skills including piano accompaniment or guitar
- Orff, Kodaly, or Dalcroze training strongly encouraged
- Enjoys collaborating with colleagues for performance opportunities
- Experience working with student populations with diverse gifts and needs
- Current First Aid, CPR, and Universal Precautions, or able to become certified within 30 days of employment
- Enjoys spending time and engaging with young children and other educators
- Committed to personal and professional growth
- Sense of humor
- Self-aware; able to ask for help when needed
- Curious about others and the world around them
- Belief in the value of a diverse community and committed to foster an inclusive environment for a diverse community
- Committed to a differentiated, whole-person approach to education
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Highly collaborative
- Proficient in use of Google suite and SeeSaw or able to become so quickly and easily
Physical Requirements:
- Able to continuously walk, stand, climb stairs, and sit
- Frequent bending or stooping, and reaching above shoulder level
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds
Compensation
This position is an hourly non-exempt position. Hourly wage for this position is between $27.50-$33.50 , depending upon qualifications and experience. Part-time Bixby employees are eligible for tax-deferred retirement plan and matching employer contributions, accrued sick leave and daily chef-prepared lunch.
