The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is seeking a talented and adaptable Interactive Designer with a strong background in design, animation, and general coding. This hybrid role will be crucial in creating interactive learning activities for medical professionals, including animated illustrations, simulations, and web solutions to support the organization's educational and marketing goals, with a primary focus on continuing medical education (CME) and e-learning content for ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals.

In this role, you will work closely with subject matter experts (volunteer physicians) and key stakeholders to develop engaging and informative digital experiences. You'll transform complex medical topics into user-friendly, interactive content through medical illustrations, storyboarding, web design, and multimedia development. Additionally, you will provide technical support for our burgeoning AI and chatbot initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have experience producing interactive media, especially medical illustrations, anatomical graphics, and 2D or 3D animations, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both internal teams and external partners. Strong skills in digital illustration, visual design, and web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) are essential, along with familiarity with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, InDesign), Microsoft Office 365, and eLearning platforms (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate).

What You'll Do

Interactive Design & Learning Solutions

Design dynamic e-learning activities, including animations, simulations, games, and interactive modules for eLearning courses or digital products. Develop and implement interactive activities and simulations from the ground up using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other object-oriented programming languages. Work directly with volunteer physicians, using storyboards, wireframes, and prototypes, to ensure the content aligns with medical needs and educational objectives. Quality Assurance/Technical Support:

Ensure the quality of digital products and apps (iOS, Android, or web-based) prior to launch, guaranteeing functionality and user experience. Provide ongoing technical support for department staff, assisting with content management systems and digital product troubleshooting. Multimedia Editing:

Edit video and audio as assigned Other Responsibilities:

Support emerging technology projects or any new funded project as assigned by manager. Assist with AI and Chatbot project data preprocessing, ensuring that data is clean and properly structured for model training. Stay up-to-date with the latest technology, tools, trends, and software developments. What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree in in digital arts, interactive multimedia design, instructional technology, or related field preferred. 3+ years of hands-on experience in illustration/animation and interactive multimedia development, preferably in science or healthcare sector 2+ years of hands-on experience creating interactive learning games or simulations; working knowledge of basic front-end languages such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, and XML Understanding of the latest technology and design trends, including game design theory and generative AI Strong interactive design portfolio Professional written and verbal skills Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in designing high-quality interactive and web-based products using tools like Illustrator, Photoshop, Animate, Dreamweaver, and other Adobe Creative Suite applications Expertise in developing interactive e-learning activities (such as web-based games and simulations) from concept to completion using JavaScript, JSON, HTML, and CSS Ability to create advanced storyboards, mockups, and wireframes Experience designing content for mobile platforms and mobile applications Familiarity with reusable learning objects and content development for eLearning environments Knowledge of web services, mobile technologies, and project management principles. Knowledge of Python and data wrangling techniques Previous work experience in the medical field or healthcare industry highly desirable Work Requirements

Travel to/from Academy annual meeting, approximately 5-7 days/annual; other travel is possible, as required Eligible to work remotely (with manager approval), up to 3 days per week
