Do you have a passion for digital media and storytelling, where you develop content for multiple platforms by writing, shooting and editing creative and informative content that highlights the mission and work of our transportation safety-focused organization?
This position is responsible for creating written and visual products that enhance the understanding of the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission’s (WMSC) rail safety oversight, and for creating or assisting with other communications. The emphasis is on accuracy, clarity, and conciseness to support the WMSC’s safety mission. The ideal candidate for this position must have strong customer service, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and experience handling multiple priorities.
The WMSC is the designated State Safety Oversight Agency responsible for overseeing the safety of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail system, which operates rail transit in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. The WMSC is responsible for implementing an oversight program in compliance with the WMSC Compact as well as federal and other applicable regulations.
Responsibilities:
· Create written products as directed that enhance public, internal or external understanding of complex information in an accurate, clear and concise manner.
· Determine and implement the best formats (photos, video, presentation, etc.) and language to accurately communicate complex technical information in a simple, understandable way.
· Collaborate on written products such as reports, web content, manuals, and publications .
· Create digital content that distills complex information into understandable and informative messaging that supports organizational goals.
· Prepare written materials and proof the work of others.
· Conduct research, i dentify required data or information, ensure the use of proper technical terminology, and fact check documents, statements and reports as directed.
· Work with teams to appropriately record interviews, document reviews, field activities or other work through notes, photographs or other methods.
· Inform media and government affairs contacts of key events or products, answer media inquiries, and participate in media on-camera and off-camera interviews.
· All other duties as assigned.
Experience
2-5 years of increasing responsibility working independently and in teams. Demonstrable experience creating and managing communication content, plans and initiatives for internal and external audiences, and developing and managing digital content.
Education
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.
Residency Requirement
Due to the nature of the work of the WMSC, it is required that the candidate live within 30 miles of any WMATA Metrorail station.
Certifications
· A valid driver’s license or have access to reliable transportation.
· Once hired, required to complete the Public Transportation Safety Certification Training Program.
This is a full-time position that is primarily remote . Salaries are regionally competitive and will be commensurate with skills and experience. WMSC offers a robust benefits package.
