Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest advocacy association representing member companies, state biotechnology groups, academic and research institutions, and related organizations across the United States and in 30+ countries. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. BIO also produces the BIO International Convention, the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry, along with industry-leading investor and partnering meetings held around the world. The Vice President of Digital Communications & Strategy will lead BIO's comprehensive digital ecosystem and content strategy across owned, earned, and paid channels to advance organizational priorities, and drive member and stakeholder engagement. This role is an integral part of BIO’s communications team and will orchestrate data-driven digital initiatives that amplify biotech innovation stories support policy objectives, and the BIO brand and Convention. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and execute a comprehensive digital communications strategy that advances the priorities of the Biotech industry and its allies and positions BIO as the leading voice for Biotechnology Innovations. Lead the evolution of BIO's digital communications, including visual identity, voice, and engagement approach across web properties, social media, and owned communications channels. Architect and implement a multi-channel content strategy across the BIO.news platform, IAMBIO podcast, video content, and digital storytelling Design and execute data-driven digital advocacy campaigns that mobilize stakeholders, influence policy discussions, and advance the industry's legislative priorities. Oversee reputation management and digital crisis preparedness, including monitoring, response protocols, and proactive narrative development. Establish a comprehensive digital measurement framework with KPIs that demonstrate impact and ROI across all digital initiatives. Partner with BIO Marketing to support membership and event communications, including digital and multi-media content from the BIO convention. Lead and mentor a high-performing digital team including agencies and freelancers to deliver exceptional digital experiences. Includes day-to-day management and accountability of execution within project timelines. Collaborate with IT on digital infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment between communications needs and technical solutions. Manage the digital department's budget effectively while identifying opportunities for strategic investment in digital capabilities. REQUIRED BACKGROUND, EDUCATION, and SKILLS: Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in digital communications leadership, with at least 5 years managing integrated digital campaigns for policy, advocacy, or complex B2B organizations. Healthcare experience required. Bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Digital Media, Political Science, or related field. Travel as required (approximately 25%), including evenings and weekends, for industry events, member meetings, and advocacy initiatives. REQUIRED SKILLS: Digital Strategy Leadership:
Track record of results as an experienced digital strategistwith experience implementing web, social, email, and multimedia channels to achieve organizational objectives. Content Strategy & Management:
Strong people and process leader who has overseen quarterly digital planning, web site redesign and metrics-based social media reporting. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including the overall quarterly digital content planning calendar across all channels, digital campaign efforts, and reactive social media needs. Data-Driven Decision Making:
Strong analytical capabilities and experience using digital analytics tools to measure performance, optimize campaigns, and demonstrate ROI. Digital Advocacy Expertise:
Strong political acumen with experience mobilizing stakeholders through digital channels to influence policy outcomes. Team Leadership & Development:
Track record of building and mentoring high-performing digital teams, including direct staff management and oversight of agency/vendor relationships. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Proven ability to partner across departments and with external stakeholders to align digital strategies with organizational priorities. Expert communicator:
Exceptional writing and editing skills with a demonstrated ability to work in rapid response environments. Digital Innovation:
Avid social media user and news consumer. Values timely communications and engagement and knows how to apply cutting-edge communications strategies in a trade association environment.
