The Role
HuffPost is seeking a skilled, experienced, ambitious reporter to cover breaking news during U.S. Eastern Time evening/night hours for our large, diverse, engaged and news-obsessed audience. The reporter will be on the frontline of HuffPost’s coverage of the major stories of the day, and will cover breaking news on a range of subjects, from U.S. politics to major court cases to international events. The ideal candidate has a minimum of five years of experience with reporting and editing; however, we encourage candidates with less experience to apply provided they have the necessary skills for the role. This remote, full-time position role’s typical shifts occur during U.S. Eastern Time evening/night hours and will involve work on one weekend day.
You Will
- Report on breaking news on a range of subjects.
- Contribute to live coverage of major events, such as elections, debates, and natural disasters.
- Consistently pitch ideas for daily news coverage and execute on those ideas.
- Independently identify which news events to cover and how to cover them.
- At times direct breaking news coverage if an editor is absent.
You Have
- Exceptional writing and researching skills.
- A willingness to hit the phones and pivot from one topic to another without hesitation.
- Command of how to report and structure a news story.
- Strong news judgment.
- A knack for brainstorming informative, interesting, and fun story ideas.
- The ability to collaborate across multiple teams and juggle several stories and projects at the same time.
- Speed and precision in covering breaking news events, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- An expansive and varied news diet and an obsession with breaking news.
- A minimum of five years of experience with reporting and editing. (We encourage candidates with less experience to apply provided they have the necessary skills for the role.)
- Fluency in digital news-gathering tools, including social media, is a plus.
