Trainee Reporter - YorkshireLive (Maternity Cover)
- Full-time
- Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract
- Location: On Patch
- Division: Editorial
- Department: Regionals
We are looking for a Trainee Reporter to join our exciting digital newsroom at YorkshireLive, covering either of our growing West or South Yorkshire patch. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about local journalism and is hungry to find and report on the issues which matter most to our readers.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.
This is a maternity cover fixed term contract role, initially for 9 months, starting as soon as possible.
This role is home based; however, it is essential that you are based in or around South or West Yorkshire.
What will the role involve?
You will work as part of our dynamic team to produce engaging digital content. You will have the opportunity to provide live coverage of breaking news and deliver exclusive off-diary stories written in a way that ensures as many people as possible see and respond to our work.
You will build strong contacts within the industry for story gathering, sourcing, and conducting interviews. You will take pictures and film footage whilst you are out on patch reporting, always thinking of how to scoop the next exclusive. This role involves working shifts on a rota basis including some weekends and evenings, so a flexible approach is required.
Who are we looking for?
You are a passionate journalist with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification and excellent knowledge of media law. You want to develop your skills to obtain excellent storytelling techniques, develop a keen eye for what makes a great story, and ideally already have 60-100wpm shorthand. You have some demonstrable experience working in a similar newsroom environment and a clear passion for local journalism.
You are committed to grow an expert knowledge of your patch and ideally possess a full driving licence, allowing you to be first on the scene. You know how to tell stories that will relate directly to our ever-growing and diverse audience. You have strong social media skills and an understanding of how to utilise various social platforms to make content engaging.
