Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, is seeking a Film and Theatre faculty member to fill a position beginning August 2025 in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, part of the Colleges Visual, Performing and Media Arts (VPMA) area. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

Montgomery College is a public, fully accredited by both MSCHE and the National Accreditation of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and an open admission institution. The College is dedicated to student success and is widely recognized for the quality and scope of its academic programs across three campuses in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The Visual, Performing, and Media Arts (VPMA) area has outstanding programs in the visual arts. In addition to exceptional educational experiences offered in the various art studio classes, the VPMA area also has extensive co-curricular offerings that include Artist in Residence programs, over 40 concerts, 25 exhibitions, and 8 theatre productions and dance performances each year. The thriving Artist-in-Residence series is a dynamic program that offers exhibitions, artist talks, and workshops to the students and faculty of the VPMA area. Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions like The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Towson University, the University of Maryland, Howard University, and many more, both regional and beyond.

The Film and Theatre full-time Faculty member should have the ability to teach courses in both areas, such as directing and producing student theatre productions as well as teach courses in either film appreciation or production-based filmmaking, including screenwriting. Courses such as Introduction to Theatre, Fundamentals of Acting, and Introduction to Film are essential foundational courses that are required by all Performing Arts and General Studies: Film (HACL) majors. In addition, these courses are also of critical importance in the Colleges General Education program.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid, during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses as well as a virtual campus and instructs a few select courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses, but the following position is based in Takoma Park/Silver Spring.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Teach various courses in Theatre (Acting, Production) and Film (History, Production, Editing, Screenwriting) disciplines.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts; evaluate and grade student exams, assignments, and papers.
  • Incorporate the use of an educational enterprise platform (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
  • Produce and Direct one theatre production a year.
  • Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend classes, compressed courses, and virtual courses. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Teach at any of the three physical campuses (TPSS, Rockville, and Germantown), or online through Distance Learning at Montgomery College.
  • Apply culturally relevant pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
  • Engage students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
  • Understand and commit to student success including increasing retention, transfer, and graduation and creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment for diverse students.
  • Lead advising of students at the TP/SS campus who are in the Performing Arts AA program and General Studies HACL (Humanities, Arts, Communication and Languages) Film track about program curriculum, transfer options, and professional/careers opportunities.
  • Serve on, or lead, department, discipline, campus and college committees, and take an active role in supporting the Visual and Performing Arts promotional initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the Colleges General Education program.
  • Engage in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
  • Commitment to work collegially and to support an influx of broad and distinct ideas that increase learning and strengthen the impact of our institution to collectively achieve a just experience for all.
  • Maintain an active program of professional development and participate in professional organizations and activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Masters degree in Performing Arts and/or a Film related discipline.
  • Experience teaching various theatre and film lecture and production courses at the college level.
  • Experience producing and directing plays.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and belonging through teaching or professional practice.
  • A record of professional creative and/or scholarly work.
  • The ability to integrate computer/digital technology into course delivery
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master of Fine Arts, or higher in Performing Arts and/or a Film related discipline
  • Experience teaching various theatre and film lecture and production courses beyond Teaching Assistant, as an Instructor of Record
  • Experience with film production and editing technologies such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere.
  • Experience with film and photographic technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate computer/digital technology into course delivery.
  • Demonstrated online theatre and film lecture and production teaching experience.

Hiring Range is $62,319 to $94,876.
