Job Title: Sr. Specialist, Library

Position Overview:

The Scientific Communications and Information Sciences Library Senior Specialist is a role within the Library team that reports directly to the Director of the Library. The Senior Specialist plays a vital role in advancing our research capabilities by providing essential training and support to our diverse user base. The Senior Specialist is accountable for creating, implementing, and hosting training sessions on the various library resources. This role will oversee the usage of subscribed journals and books as well as troubleshooting any problems that may arise and will be able to consult on using the subscribed resources. The Senior Specialist will also maintain up-to-date awareness in literature-related copyright compliance, vendor tools, and strategies for information retrieval. Familiarity with GenAI tools is a plus. The ideal candidate will possess scientific acumen along with technical skills, excellent communication skills, and background in pharma/biotech.

Primary activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Proficiency with search tools, such as PubMed, Embase, SciFinder, Dialog
  • Maintaining our training program by working with vendors and in-house specialists to create up-to-date programs on Library topics for the company
  • Proficiency in conveying complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including researchers, clinicians, regulatory affairs professionals, and other stakeholders
  • Consulting with stakeholders on creating search strategies
  • Overseeing document delivery company requests; handles any problems that may arise with end users obtaining articles
  • Obtaining journal articles and book chapters for agency partners
  • Negotiation with publishers of subscribed content
  • Triaging requests for support
  • Creating reports based on document delivery usage
  • Managing access to systems such as pharmacopeias and databases
  • Contributions to user acceptance testing and to system development lifecycle
  • Customer Focus – Driven to understand customer needs, improve services, and maintain effective customer relations
  • Ability to develop and maintain close working relationships with key internal departments and external contacts

Skills:

Education

  • Degree in life sciences, information science, or related scientific discipline plus pharma/biotech industry experience
    • Bachelor’s and 5+ years
    • Master’s/PhD and 3+ years

Required

  • Excitement for continuous personal professional development, staying abreast of industry trends, and applying new knowledge to enhance library services
  • Experience with biomedical, basic research, chemistry, and biotechnology information resources and commercial literature searching tools like DIALOG or STN as well as thesaurus knowledge
  • Create and maintain point-of-need materials, training videos, and online research guides
  • Create, implement, and host training sessions on various library resources
  • Guide users globally with research services and access to databases and journals to enable all colleagues to make informed decisions
  • Collect usage statistics and conduct assessments regarding current and future library needs
  • Ability to oversee the usage of subscribed journals and books as well as troubleshooting any problems that may arise
  • Ability to consult on searching databases
  • Familiarity or experience with emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
  • Ability to create, implement, and host training sessions on various library resources for diverse audiences
  • Familiarity with copyright compliance and literature-related regulations to ensure proper usage of subscribed content
  • Ability to perform independent research to learn and master new systems and tools
  • Excellent organizational skills to multi-task effectively
  • Attention to detail, ability to problem solve and work independently, escalating risks and issues as appropriate
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)

Preferred

  • Experience in partnering with a diverse set of business stakeholders across geographies, therapy areas, and functions
  • Familiarity with library and archival systems
  • Quick learner and self-starter
  • Good interactive and networking skills
