Compensation

Compensation includes a base salary of $144,900.00 - $241,500.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Job Description

As we transition from a historic daily newspaper to a dynamic modern media company, we are seeking a talented Managing Editor, Newsroom Operations to join our team. The Managing Editor of Newsroom Operations will serve as a key partner to the Editor-in-Chief, driving strategic alignment across content verticals and ensuring the newsroom delivers on its strategic priorities and business objectives. This role is central to developing and implementing a unified content strategy, fostering operational excellence, and aligning efforts across editorial and corporate processes to advance measurable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Alignment and Performance Tracking:

  • Partner with the Editor-in-Chief to develop and execute effective plans for advancing newsroom strategic priorities aligned with KPIs and OKRs.
  • Lead the newsroom's OKR-setting process, ensuring clear alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Track progress against KPIs, identify gaps, and initiate conversations to adjust strategies or tactics when results do not meet expectations.

Unified Content Strategy:

  • Collaborate with content leaders across verticals to author and implement a unified content strategy that is measurable and aligned with business goals.
  • Define and monitor content performance metrics, ensuring that editorial efforts drive audience engagement and business outcomes.
  • Develop and oversee tracking cadence for measuring content performance across the verticals and supporting editorial leadership in reporting on results and making necessary adjustments in tactics or strategic approach.

Budget and Compliance:

  • Manage the newsroom budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Oversee compliance with corporate processes, including freelance and vendor approvals, contracts, and standards.
  • Partner with newsroom leaders and finance to bring holistic views of needs and priorities.

Team Roles and Workforce Planning:

  • Partner with HR to define clear roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities across editorial teams.
  • Partner with HR to ensure newsroom onboarding and training standards are applied evenly across teams and verticals.
  • Support editorial leaders in workforce planning and business planning processes to ensure team structures align with strategic priorities.

Editorial Calendar Management:

  • Lead the development and maintenance of a holistic, comprehensive editorial calendar to streamline planning across content verticals.

Operations and Logistics:

  • Oversee newsroom operations, including scheduling (holiday coverage calendars), logistics, and day-to-day workflow management.
  • Address operational challenges to ensure the newsroom operates efficiently and effectively.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS with 12+ years relevant experience; MS with 10 years experience; PhD with 7 years experience; or 16 years experience without a degree
  • Proven leadership experience in a newsroom or editorial environment, with a focus on strategy and operations.
  • Strong understanding of key performance metrics, operational processes, and content strategies in digital and/or traditional media organizations.
  • Exceptional project management skills and experience driving cross-functional initiatives.
  • Budget management expertise and a strong understanding of corporate compliance processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams and departments.
  • Strong analytical skills, with a results-oriented approach to problem-solving and decision-making.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with OKR frameworks and performance tracking tools.
  • Familiarity with workforce planning and business planning processes in media organizations.
  • Ability to navigate complex organizational structures and manage multiple stakeholders.
