Position: Avionics and Radio Installer/Assembler
Reports To: Director of Operations
Status: Non-Exempt
BASIC WORKER FUNCTION:
Lays out, assembles, and installs avionics and electrical systems in helicopters and other products. Installs instruments and accessory equipment according to blueprints, schematics, and manufacturers specifications on a sophisticated level.
ADDITIONAL GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:
- Assembles units such as switches, electrical controls and junction boxes and connects to major units such as avionics systems, instrument magnetos and inverters.
- Assembles complex avionics packages.
- Lays out installation of major units in aircraft using scribe scale and protractor.
- Installs and connects units according to wiring schematics, diagrams, and blueprints using hand tools and soldering iron.
- Programs installed equipment.
- Tests and troubleshoots systems using multi-meters, ammeters, oscilloscopes and watt-meters and specialized test equipment.
- Certifies altimeter systems.
- Certifies transponder systems.
- Adjusts or repairs equipment for customer service as required.
- Assists customer service with the resolution of service problems.
- May implement modifications in installation and wiring for test or experimental purposes.
- May design avionics packages in non-standard situations as required.
- Writes assembly and testing instructions as required.
- Examines defective test equipment to determine cause of malfunction.
- Repairs if possible or reports need for repair or replacement to production supervisor.
- Advises production supervisor on requisitions for equipment and supplies.
- Keeps records as required by supervision.
- Maintains tools and equipment used.
- Trains other workers.
- Serves as consultation resource with other workers.
- Observes all safety regulations.
- Other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Extensive experience and demonstrated expertise in avionics/electrical field.
- Knowledge of all electrical and electromechanical procedures used in assembly, installation and testing avionics and electrical equipment in aircraft and the ability to implement.
- Ability to design avionics packages in non-standard situations, including drawing schematics, interconnections and meshing systems.
- Ability to read and work from schematics, blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and drawings.
- Ability to use soldering equipment.
- Ability to use electrical test equipment, such as ramp test set, Nav test and Transponder test set.
- Ability to rivet per FAA guidelines.
- Knowledge of FAA wiring procedures.
- FCC license (GROL plus radio mechanic endorsement) or equivalent training and experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve wiring, installation, and equipment problems.
- Knowledge of basic principles of electricity, and of AC/DC circuits.
- Knowledge of basic electrical equipment.
- Ability to use electricians and mechanics hand tools, crimpers, voltmeters, and Enstrom circuit testers.
- Ability to use shop mathematics.
