Position: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Graduate Assistant

Status: Part-time, (20hrs/week)

Department: Natural Science and Forestry

Reports to: Professor of Environmental Science, GIS and Remote Sensing

Start Date: Fall Semester 2025

Compensation: Stipend, Room, and Tuition

Description:

Paul Smith’s College seeks a highly motivated Graduate Assistant with a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to contribute to the academic environment and support faculty. This position offers a graduate student a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in teaching and related areas within the field of GIS, while contributing to a positive learning environment for undergraduate students. While the primary focus will be on GIS, opportunities may exist to leverage other relevant skills and expertise.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist faculty members in the preparation and delivery of lectures, labs, and workshops related to GIS.

Lead lab sessions, provide demonstrations, and facilitate hands-on activities to reinforce theoretical concepts discussed in lectures.

Provide guidance to students, addressing technical issues and course material comprehension

Evaluate student work and offer constructive feedback to promote academic growth

Assist in the development and updating of course materials, including lab exercises, assignments, and supplementary resources.

Collaborate with faculty members to develop new instructional materials, innovative teaching approaches, and assessment strategies.

Stay informed about advancements in GIS and related technologies, integrating new developments as appropriate.

Participate in regular meetings with faculty supervisors to discuss course progress and strategies.

Assist with other duties as needed, including driving vans to support academic programming, or assigned by the Professor of Environmental Science, GIS and Remote Sensing.

This position description is primarily focused on GIS-related responsibilities but allows for the potential to leverage other relevant skills and experience. Specific responsibilities will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful applicant based on departmental needs and the candidate's qualifications.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution and enrollment in Paul Smith’s College Master’s degree programs.

Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.

Must have training and/or experience in Geographic Information Systems, including proven ability to use ArcGIS Pro and other ESRI products.

Should be highly motivated, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and a passion for learning and contributing to the academic community.

Candidates must be able to work on campus (not remote).

The ideal candidate will have familiarity with Remote Sensing techniques.

Prior teaching or tutoring, or other relevant experience within the field of GIS is preferred but not required.

Experience with related technologies or methodologies is a plus.

Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier is preferred.
