POSITION SUMMARY The Design Operations Manager (DOM) for our client is a key leader responsible for overseeing the technical execution and operational performance of engineering projects. Reporting to the Senior Vice President/Division Manager (SVP/DM), the DOM ensures that all engineering projects are executed effectively and efficiently while meeting technical and financial requirements, timelines, and client expectations. The DOM is responsible for managing resources, schedules, budgets, and risk while maintaining high standards for quality, safety, and compliance. This role involves collaborating with engineering teams to define and drive project goals, as well as participating in business development efforts such as proposal preparation and client relationship management.

The DOM also plays a key role in ensuring continuous improvement in engineering processes and operations. Organizational Relationship

The DOM is an integral member of the engineering leadership team and works closely with the Division Manager, engineering teams, and other departments to ensure alignment with company objectives. Accountability

The DOM is accountable to the SVP/DM for the successful execution of engineering operations, including meeting project goals, delivering on financial objectives, managing resources, and ensuring client satisfaction. The DOM is responsible for the development, performance, and well-being of all engineering staff within the division. Authority

The DOM, in collaboration with the SVP/DM, has the authority to recruit, hire, promote, terminate, and transfer engineering personnel within the division. The DOM is also authorized to negotiate and approve technical aspects of client agreements or prepare them for SVP/DM review in conjunction with legal counsel.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Business Development Lead the preparation and technical review of engineering proposals, ensuring accurate scope definition, feasibility analysis, and cost estimation. Engage with clients to understand technical needs and provide expert guidance to align proposals with client requirements. Contribute to business development efforts by identifying new opportunities and leveraging technical capabilities to attract and secure clients. Pre-project Planning and Technical Oversight Collaborate with the SVP/DM and engineering teams to develop project scopes, schedules, and resource plans. Conduct technical reviews of project plans and designs to ensure alignment with industry standards, client specifications, and quality expectations. Oversee estimation of technical resources, timelines, and costs, ensuring projects are accurately planned from inception. Project Operations and Performance Management Oversee the technical execution of engineering projects, ensuring deliverables meet client specifications, budgets, and deadlines. Develop and refine project schedules to align with engineering milestones and critical timelines. Monitor and manage project financials, working with the CFO to track budgets and report performance. Implement risk management strategies to mitigate technical challenges, delays, and resource constraints. Ensure compliance with quality standards, safety protocols, and industry regulations throughout the project lifecycle. Resource and Talent Management Lead the recruitment and onboarding of engineering talent to support division projects. Mentor and guide engineers and technical staff to foster professional development and growth. Manage allocation of engineering resources across multiple projects to balance workloads and meet project needs. Policy and Procedure Implementation Develop and implement engineering policies and best practices to enhance operational efficiency. Ensure compliance with company protocols, industry standards, and regulations. Continuously evaluate and refine engineering processes to drive improvements in project delivery and client satisfaction. Client and Stakeholder Relations Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, serving as the technical point of contact for project-related inquiries. Address client concerns and technical issues promptly to ensure alignment with expectations. Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to reinforce technical capabilities and enhance industry reputation. Culture, Leadership, and Employee Development Promote a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the engineering team. Foster an environment that encourages creative problem-solving and continuous learning. Provide mentorship to junior engineers to support career advancement. Promote accountability and a focus on company growth and profitability.

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES Operations Management Extensive technical knowledge in engineering with the ability to analyze complex data and make informed decisions. Strong proficiency in managing engineering projects, including scheduling, resource allocation, financial budgeting, and performance monitoring. Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on technical solutions and improving project outcomes. In-depth knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices. Familiarity with engineering management software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit). Excellent communication and negotiation skills for effective collaboration with clients and stakeholders. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to motivate and guide engineering teams. Ability to manage multiple complex projects and meet deadlines.

WORKING CONDITIONS The DOM will primarily work from an office location but may visit project sites or client locations as needed to monitor progress and engage stakeholders.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or related field). 10-15 years of progressive experience in engineering project management, focusing on delivering technical solutions within a professional services or engineering firm. Proven experience leading and managing teams of engineers and technical staff. Strong expertise in project management, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation. Proficiency in engineering design software, project management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite. Commitment to continuous improvement, safety, and delivering high-quality solutions to clients.
