POSITION SUMMARY:

The Proposal Writer reports to the Campaign Director. This position is responsible for researching, writing, and producing customized communications to engage and inspire support from Pomona’s most generous donors, as well as building out key communication pieces to support the organization’s fundraising campaign.

The Proposal Writer is part of the Campaign team and will interface with colleagues across Pomona College, including leadership, the Office of Advancement—specifically Advancement Communications and Stewardship—and Pomona College faculty and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting directly to the Campaign Director, the Proposal Writer must work independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Interview and consult with key College leadership and stakeholders in preparation of case materials and proposals.
  • Plan, write, edit, and produce proposals, reports, and other personalized communications that help Pomona College secure and steward principal gifts.
  • Research and write engaging, accurate and persuasive copy that speaks to targeted, strategic and diverse Pomona College constituencies, including compelling and creative narratives that communicate the impact of philanthropy at Pomona.
  • Develop and write comprehensive, strategic print and digital pieces to effectively promote the Pomona College Campaign fundraising initiatives, including those that are customized to individual constituents.
  • Develop themes, and craft copy, correspondence, presentations and remarks for bespoke donor experiences, including assisting senior college leadership with their donor communications.
  • In conjunction with the Office of the Vice President and Campaign Director, conceptualize, research, write and edit gift proposals for individual principal and transformational donors, as well as case statements, concept papers, donor correspondence, fundraising collateral, and stewardship communications.
  • Coordinate with designers, vendors, and College partners to create and design off-the-shelf proposals, templates, and other fundraising campaign materials.
  • Cultivate sources and identify content to meet strategic advancement communications needs.
  • Work closely with communications colleagues across the College to produce materials that are consistent in voice, well-written, appropriate in style, tone and professional in format and appearance that advance development strategies and align with Pomona’s brand guidelines and existing templates.
  • Copy/edit fundraising and stewardship materials as needed.
  • Re-write, edit and proofread documents from others as requested.
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree with strong English writing capabilities. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: A minimum of ten years of experience with strategic communications and donor communications. Experience in an academic setting is strongly preferred, as is working in a comprehensive fundraising campaign environment. Experience in a complex academic development setting is encouraged. Strong understanding of the issues, nuances and needs of a diverse academic enterprise and liberal arts environment.
