The DownCity Design Summer Design Studio program is a unique collaborative summer program for Providence County high school students that takes place at PCTA (Providence Career and Technical Academy). DownCity Design (DCD) educators and staff will work together to design and deliver a 6-week experience that will get students excited about design, provide concrete STEAM skills, and empower youth to make an impact in their communities.

Location: Providence Career and Technical Academy (41 Fricker Street, Providence)

Dates and Times: 6 full weeks between July 7 – August 18, 2025; M-F 8:30am-3:30pm. Additional training is mandatory prior to the program start date. Educators must be available during the six-week period of the program and for all required training. Additional training will take place during the months of May, June, and July. Times and dates of additional training to be determined.

Compensation: $21-26/hour, depending on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Summer Design Studio Educators will be expected to:

  • Develop a 6-week design learning curricula, in partnership with co-educators
  • Prepare daily lesson plans and reflect on their success with the team in weekly debriefs
  • Lead fun design challenges, team-building activities, and reflections
  • Keep students motivated and focused as they complete graphic design or design/build projects for community clients
  • Ensure completion and documentation of service projects
  • Oversee classroom management and address behavioral issues using positive youth development strategies
  • Work with DCD staff to oversee field trips and classroom visits from design professionals
  • Manage teaching assistants to help in the classroom
  • Supervise lunch and break blocks during the day
  • Attend all paid, pre-summer training and planning sessions
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, final debrief session and final celebration event
  • Perform other responsibilities, as needed, to help the program run smoothly

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Solid design and/or fabrication skills with strong preference for experience in graphic design, design/build, furniture design, landscape design, architectural design or carpentry
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD and/or SketchUp
  • Teaching experience (ideally working with high school students)
  • Comfort working closely with young people, especially those who identify as BIPOC, queer or LGBTQI, newcomers, first-generation immigrants, and neurodivergent.
  • Openness to creative collaboration and working as a team
  • Excitement about project-based learning and social justice
  • The ability to commit time to attend spring training sessions and planning meetings
