As a Senior Mechanical Designer, you will play a pivotal role in designing custom fixtures and complex tooling systems. Working with minimal supervision, you will bring customer concepts to life through detailed 3D and 2D models using CATIA and other leading design software. You will ensure that designs not only meet technical specifications and industry standards but also push the boundaries of innovation in manufacturing and plant layout validation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design custom fixtures with minimal direction, ensuring solutions are both innovative and practical.
- Develop complex tooling from scratch, including design clamps, stationary pin units, retractable pin units, slides and dumps, as well as compound units.
- Read and interpret customer-supplied documentation, including GD&T, weld files, and other technical specifications.
- Check and validate both 3D and 2D drawing packages for accuracy and compliance with design standards.
- Create Request for Wiring Diagrams (RWDs) and generate all supporting documentation required for project approval.
- Develop comprehensive Bill of Materials (BOMs) for manufacturing processes.
- Layout and detail complex tooling designs, ensuring every component meets project specifications.
- Identify non-preferred design practices, recommending alternative solutions and improvements to enhance overall design integrity.
- Perform engineering calculations to verify design integrity and ensure safety standards are met.
- Quality & Compliance Checks:
- Understand tolerances, proper material usage, and MIG weld torch angle requirements for clearance checks.
- Ensure all file attributes meet the necessary criteria for tool release into the ERP system.
- Utilize the latest file check and design assist programs to maintain high-quality standards.
- Create component buyoff sheets to confirm that all design elements have been thoroughly vetted.
- Team Collaboration & Mentorship:
- Assist and mentor team members, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Educational Background: High School Diploma or GED equivalent (additional technical certifications or coursework preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of work-related experience in mechanical design. Demonstrated experience in designing Body-In-White weld fixtures (Resistance Welding) or MIG welding fixtures.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Advanced proficiency with CATIA software is essential.
- Experience with additional design software such as NX, Unigraphics or Inventor is a plus.
- Strong familiarity with mechanical design principles and plant layout validation.
- Proficient in creating detailed 3D models, layouts, and engineering drawings.
- Working knowledge of industry safety and ergonomic standards.
- Strong analytical and logical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and validate design integrity.
- Communication Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication.
