Primary Purpose
The Librarian creates a dynamic program establishing the library as a central element of the school, positively impacting student achievement, learning, literacy, and school culture. The librarian supports best instructional practices and curriculum standards through the integration of resources and opportunities.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
Texas teaching certificate
Valid Texas school librarian certificate or learning resources certificate or endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills
Effective communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Proficient in working with media/computer technologies
Strong organizational skills
Experience
Minimum of 5 years experience teaching in a public school setting preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Information Literacy: The librarian offers information literacy instruction that enables stakeholders to efficiently locate, accurately evaluate, ethically use, and clearly communicate information in various formats.
- Provides opportunities for learners and educators to access, apply, and evaluate print and digital resources for their inquiry, academic, and personal needs.
- Practices and models the ethical and legal gathering and use of information, technology, and media.
- Includes opportunities for collaboration among members of the learning community.
- Provides opportunities to help learners become creative problem solvers and independent users and producers of ideas and information.
- Creates opportunities to cultivate curiosity through a carefully curated collection in a variety of formats as well as identification and exploration of real-world problems and developing strategies to solve those problems.
- Promotes inquiry approach to learning for students to pursue, create, share, and grow knowledge.
- Offers professional learning opportunities that promote best practices in inquiry-based teaching and learning.
- Encourages students to read a variety of literature for information and pleasure by providing access to physical and virtual collections.
- Supports, supplements, and elevates literacy instruction through research-based strategies and participation in state and local reading initiatives.
- Curates materials that reflect diversity and maximize student choice.
- Curates materials to support the needs of the curriculum and the state standards.
- Provides programs that encourage collaboration with other libraries, information institutions, and/or community partners.
- Promotes the ethical use of engaging technology applications and tools across all content areas for discovery, collaboration, critical analysis, creation, and demonstration of learning.
- Actively provides an equitable, diverse, and open collection of digital resources.
- Models and encourages ethical and legal guidelines for gathering and using digital intellectual property, understanding current copyright rules, and inspiring others to engage in positive digital citizenship practices.
- Cultivates a sense of community and respect while representing diverse points of view.
- Promotes an environment that is a safe, inviting, accessible environment for all.
- Develops and maintains a diverse collection of resources and activities appropriate to the curriculum and all learners.
- Fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners.
- Advocates for and protects users’ right to privacy, confidentiality, age-appropriate principles of intellectual freedom, and equitable access.
- Actively seeks opportunities to engage in campus planning, district planning, professional learning, and continuing education.
- Strategically utilizes a variety of data points including campus and district goals and strategic plans to develop program activities, collection development, resource management, and circulation needs.
- Reviews national and state library standards to align program services.
