Job Summary/Overview:

This position is responsible for performing routine circulation, shelf maintenance, and clerical functions using an automated library system. Duties include charging library materials in and out, shelving materials, data entry, and answering telephones. The Library Clerk makes beginning-level clerical decisions and requires a fundamental understanding of library clerical procedures.

Supervision Received:

Works under the direct supervision of the Library Manager or the Three Rivers Regional Library System (TRRLS) Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Charges and discharges books, magazines, and other library materials using an automated circulation system, and collects fines.
  • Pulls and manages holds, maintains the holds shelf, and arranges for holds pickup and delivery.
  • Shelves library materials according to established numbering systems.
  • Inspects returned materials for damage.
  • Performs routine library computer functions and operates standard office and library equipment.
  • Answers telephones, provides general information, and directs calls as necessary.
  • Ensures accurate shelving through shelf-reading and re-shelving.
  • Safely pushes and pulls wheeled objects weighing 60-80 pounds.
  • Safely lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with library clerical procedures and practices (preferred).
  • Proficient in the English language.
  • Basic typing and data entry skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the public.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Library clerical experience (preferred).

Physical Demands:

  • The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials, including books and boxes, which may weigh up to 50 lbs.
