Description:
Reporting to the Richard Benson Associate Curator of Photography and Digital Media, the fellow will be fully integrated into the Department of Photography, gaining broad, hands-on experience with photographic collections in an academic museum that emphasizes object-based teaching. The fellow provides organizational, teaching, and project support related to the Gallery’s photography collection. They serve as the primary liaison between the department, the Education team, and faculty teaching from the photography collection. Additionally, the fellow will facilitate visits from community members and classes outside of Yale, working closely with other fellows across the museum to access the collection. The fellow will conduct both scholarly and provenance research, catalogue new acquisitions and the permanent collection, and engage with scholars, students, and the public regarding matters related to the collection. This position offers the opportunity to propose acquisitions, conduct independent research, and assist with special exhibitions and rotations of the permanent collection.
We welcome and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and view this fellowship as hands-on preparation for potential curators of photography and related positions. Emerging scholars with an advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or a related academic field, as well as a strong interest in the history of photography and teaching with collections, are particularly encouraged to apply.

- The fellow will work closely with classes and develop a teaching pedagogy for teaching with objects.
- The fellow will receive training in the proper handling of works of art on paper.
- The fellow will receive training in provenance research and in the proper compilation of an object’s bibliography.
- Mentorship will be provided in the research, formation, and delivery of gallery talks and public presentations.
- Working closely with the department curator, the Fellow will be introduced to all aspects of preparing large-scale exhibitions and smaller seasonal rotations, from selecting objects to writing and editing exhibition texts and wall labels.
- The fellow will assist in the management and training of the undergraduate interns.
- The fellow will attend art fairs, meet with artists and dealers, and be encouraged to propose acquisitions and learn about the market.
This is a full-time, one-year fellowship, with the possibility for renewal for a second year.
