Central Michigan University – Video Labs Manager
Position Summary: This position works in the School of Communication, Journalism, and Media’s (SCJM) Media Arts area, one of the preeminent media programs in the country. The SCJM Video Labs Manager oversees daily operations of student video production and video equipment checkout facilities, coordinates equipment maintenance and repair, assists in production of cable and online student-produced video programming, administers editing labs, production computers and servers, and advises and trains students in our student-run television and video production co-curricular activities.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in TV/Film Production or related field.
- 3-5 years’ experience in all phases of production.
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite products.
- Extremely familiar with best practices of operating and maintaining a television studio and video transport technologies.
- Experience in video operations, technical operations and/or asset management.
- Familiarity or experience with digital content lifecycle, from production through distribution.
- Troubleshooting skills with camera, audio and lighting systems and equipment.
- Detail-oriented with strong people management skills, especially when utilizing a team of students.
- Strong ability to establish priorities and work under time constraints.
- Willingness to work on a collaborative team.
- Ability to perform essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in media, communications, or related field.
- Excellent writing, communication, and administrative skills.
- Strong working knowledge of drones for video production and FAA Drone License.
- Experience with or certification in Dante, NDI, and SBE-CBNE.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manages Moore Hall Television including responsibility for all programming and related 24-hour-a-day operations, student staff, and legal compliance.
- Advises MHTV students, including student executive staff and program producers/production staff, and video practicum students.
- Ensures proper functioning of all video facilities, including digital video and audio transport systems, in the School of Communication, Journalism, and Media (SCJM) and coordinates with appropriate engineering staff and/or University IT or Facilities Management.
- Oversees SCJM equipment checkout facility, which includes creating and maintaining an efficient equipment checkout workflow, administering checkout database and software, tracking equipment usage privileges for current students, and training and supervising graduate assistant employees and instructors who need access to gear.
- Researches, makes purchase recommendations, and designs new video facilities and systems to keep School video technology current with industry standards; is the subject matter expert and master trainer for all field and studio video equipment; performs repairs on equipment or coordinates repairs with proper engineering or customer service representatives as needed.
- Manages and maintains School video inventory in conjunction with University Assets Management.
- Coordinates equipment and facility usage by internal and external parties; creates and maintains the SCJM video production rate card, as well as negotiates rental agreements when required.
- Leads tours of School and video facilities for prospective students, parents, alumni, and various University staff/faculty.
- Manages media databases to ensure all student productions are properly archived.
- Other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend work may be required.
