PlanIT Group is seeking a Technical Writer for our Federal customer in the Washington, DC area. The Technical Writer must be able to understand what is being read and written to. While the tech writer does not need to be a content expert, they must be able to correspond and ensure consistency in documentation based on a basic understanding. Knowledge of organizational references and interactions is needed. A key element of "consistency" is to understand the material to the point where the Technical Writer can identify similarities and inconsistencies in related documents.

Job Title: Technical Writer

This person will provide the following capabilities:

  • Research, prepare, and edit technical documents, including process manuals, user manuals, training materials, installation guides, and reports.
  • With SME inputs, independently write detailed procedure and policy documents based on discussions with process owners and in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Work independently to ensure effective content management and establish a regular business rhythm for reviewing and updating company documents from a shared document collaborative site.
  • Maintain documentation changes within a Governance process due to business process changes, reorganization, or system enhancements.
  • Maintain documents on a collaborative site where version control access is practiced.
  • Be able to work independently in a workflow process environment, monitoring and making changes throughout the approval process.

Minimum Qualifications – Clearance and Place Of Performance Requirements:

  • Candidates must be able to commute to the customer site in Washington, DC.
  • After the initial intake, a minimum of one day on-site at the customer site is expected. Candidates must also be able to commute as needed to meet with SMEs and complete assignments.

Minimum Qualified Degree, Certifications, Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or a 2-year degree with equivalent work experience in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of eight years' experience in technical writing and desktop publishing.
  • Knowledge and experience developing procedural IT/Technical documentation, process maps, and affiliated training materials.
  • Exceptional written communication and listening skills with strong proofreading and editorial skills, and proven experience effectively addressing executive-level personnel feedback.
  • Proactively reach out to Content/Subject experts, interview them, and translate the information they provide.
  • Moderate to expert level in MS Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio.
  • Moderate to expert level in Adobe Acrobat products.

Desired Skills Considered a Plus:

  • SharePoint experience, comfortable in posting, editing, versioning, and removing documents on a Collaborative Site.
  • Basic understanding of the impact Audit/Oversight-based organizations have on schedules and artifacts.

Example Document References:

Candidate submissions should include 2-4 document examples showcasing technical writing skills applied while on assignment. Examples include process and procedures documents for: Patch Management, Risk Management, Information Security Continuous Monitoring, Managing Software Releases, Vulnerability Management, Data Center Backup and Storage, and Telecommunications.

Additional Provisions:

  • Must be able to obtain a Position of Public Trust Clearance.
  • Pass both a client-mandated clearance process including drug screening, criminal history check, and credit check.
  • All candidates must be US citizens and have lived in the United States for the past 5 years.
  • Cannot have more than 6 months travel outside the United States within the last five years, excluding military service.
