Summary

The Summer Library Assistant works closely with coworkers and management to support the Summer Reading Program (SRP). This role is seasonal in nature, beginning in June and ending in August. The work schedule may vary and is subject to change. There are no guarantees of working hours. Employees may work a variable number of hours each week ranging from 10 hours up to 28 hours per week, depending on department needs and individual availability.

Essential Functions
  1. Explain the SRP to patrons and distribute reading logs
  2. Assist patrons with program registration
  3. Set up tables and chairs for programs
  4. Assist program performers with set up and checking in registrants
  5. Prepare craft materials and supplies
  6. Collect reading logs from patrons who completed the SRP and distribute prizes
  7. Perform basic circulation functions including checking materials in
  8. Empty book drops
  9. Sort materials in preparation for shelving
  10. Shelve library materials
  11. Scheduling flexibility based on the needs of the business
  12. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance for scheduled shifts
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by management
Other Functions
  1. Perform readers advisory for patrons based on age, interest, and reading level
  2. Promote literacy, intellectual freedom, and equal access to information
  3. Record statistics as directed by management
  4. Enforce the Library's Code of Conduct Policy
  5. Report safety concerns to management
Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to complete keyboard entry
  2. Ability to talk, hear, and see
  3. Ability to lift 30 lbs., push carts weighing 50 pounds, and shelve materials on high and low shelves
  4. Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time and intermittently

Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education and Experience

Library experience

Work with children, tweens, and teens

Ability to speak a language in addition to English

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Ability to pass Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Fingerprint Based Federal Criminal History Check.
