2025 Underscore Indigenous Journalism Fellowship
The Underscore Indigenous Journalism Fellowship is designed to help equip and encourage the next generation of journalists. Each summer, we host and train a collegiate journalism student or early-career journalist for an immersive 10-week internship, giving the fellow professional experience with a living wage, fully paid housing, and a scholarship upon completion of the fellowship. The application deadline is March 20. Earlier submissions are highly encouraged.
PROGRAM DETAILS
- 10-week summer internship at Underscore Native News headquarters in Portland, OR
- Full-time hours (30–40 hours/week) June–August preferred, flexibility available for degree-seeking students
- $20/hour wage
- Work and train under the guidance of senior staff and alongside fellow early-career journalists
- Report and write in-depth stories, including opportunities for audio and visual work
- Be published by Underscore Native News and our republishing partners
- Access to weekly journalism trainings offered by The Oregonian, which also offers networking and camaraderie opportunities with other journalism interns
- Fully paid housing on the beautiful campus of Lewis and Clark College
- Transportation reimbursement for move to and from Portland
- $2,000 scholarship upon completion of the program if the candidate is a degree-seeking student who will be returning to school after the internship
- Professional references from Underscore leadership for applications to jobs, graduate school, or other opportunities
