Performing Arts Faculty/Instrumental Music Teacher
Reports to: Associate Head for Faculty and School Affairs/Arts Department Chair
Job Summary: The school is seeking a teaching musician to support the music program at St. George’s School within an academically rigorous secondary school program. The position will include directing instrumental ensembles; supporting musicians in weekly chapel services; teaching courses in musicianship, music foundations, technology, production, and performance; and managing audio engineering for live and studio productions.
Major Responsibilities:
- Direct the instrumental music program to support the development of student instrumentalists at a variety of skill levels.
- Serve as a member of the Department of Visual & Performing Arts in the development of opportunities for students in musicianship, composition, technology, and performance.
- Teach two to three sections of music courses each semester and direct weekly instrumental ensemble rehearsals in the evenings.
- Oversee operation and use of technology, including sound equipment, for school events in collaboration with the performing arts program. Applicants should have experience with digital sound boards and mixing live performances.
- Envision performances throughout the year that showcase student work.
- Participate in the continued design of curricular and extracurricular opportunities in music production and technology.
- Contribute to the athletic, residential, and extra-curricular endeavors of the school community.
- Other duties, including evening supervision of the campus, as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Passion to work with teenagers in a complex and demanding academic environment.
- Significant experience as a music teacher and ensemble director.
- Significant experience as a musician: instrumentalist/songwriter/composer and/or producer.
- Experience running digital sound boards and mixing live performances.
- Enthusiasm to participate in an integrated program of arts teaching at the high school level, including the visual arts, theater, and in the liturgical music, classical, jazz, pop, gospel, electronic music, and/or world music traditions.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and serving students and teachers from all backgrounds and traditions.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (both written and oral).
- A strong work ethic, a sense of humor, and familiarity with the needs, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school.
- Skills and expertise to help advance the school’s equity and inclusion strategic plan as well as commitment to professional and personal growth.
- Bachelor’s degree in Music and/or Performing Arts; Master’s degree preferred.
