The Role

Lumen's Enterprise User Experience Design & Research Team is seeking a Lead User Experience Designer with a solid foundation in UX. This position will have a tremendous opportunity to directly influence and lead the user experience and strategy for the team/area they support.

The ideal candidate will thrive in an environment that requires self-direction, strong problem-solving skills, and innovative thinking paired with effective collaboration and clear communication. This individual is both highly analytical and highly creative with solid presentation skills. This individual can juggle a few projects while delivering high-quality work to the team(s) they support. This individual can justify their design decisions through clearly articulated rationale backed by an understanding of user-centered design techniques and methodologies.

The Main Responsibilities

  1. Identify new problems, opportunities, and desired outcomes for your team to solve.
  2. Responsible for implementing differentiating customer experience initiatives, tools, and processes, including customer experience testing.
  3. Perform customer and market research, analyzing data to understand customer segments, trends, needs, and expectations, developing draft application models, and templates to meet user needs.
  4. Push for strategic research that will help share the areas you support.
  5. Provide mentoring and coaching to more junior designers.
  6. Understand the importance of research, design thinking, and storytelling and how they help determine what solutions you design.
  7. Effectively collaborate with Product and Development partners to bring experiences to life.
  8. Design simple and elegant experiences for complex solutions.
  9. Advocate for Lumen's end-users throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
  10. Establish, document, and validate design assumptions.
  11. Maintain and suggest evolutions of our design principles and existing style guides with a holistic consideration of our future experiences.
  12. Be comfortable juggling multiple projects and partnering with stakeholders to set clear expectations around timelines and deliverables.

What We Look For in a Candidate

  1. 8+ years of user-centered design techniques and methodologies.
  2. Bachelor's Degree in User Experience, Interaction Design, Human Factors, Psychology, or a related field.
  3. A portfolio or case study that can be used to demonstrate your experience.
  4. You have a robust set of tactical user experience skills, a solid strategic influence, and a solid understanding of visual/UI design.
  5. You rapidly understand project requirements, frequently fill in gaps of understanding, and accurately list trade-offs.
  6. Expert-level understanding of design principles, including best practices for inclusive design/accessibility, mobile, and responsive web design.
  7. Confidence in your design decisions and able to communicate them with stakeholders in languages they understand.
  8. Ability to diverge and converge on ideas quickly and effectively.
  9. Ability to solicit feedback from other designers as a tool for teaching different methods and benefits of good critique.
  10. Comfortability driving and facilitating conversations/interviews/workshops with stakeholders to further understand the problem space you work within and the users you design for.
  11. Ability to socialize your learnings with the rest of your team in a thoughtful, articulate way to enhance everyone's understanding of our products and users.

Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges:

  1. $103,711 - $138,281 in these states: AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MO, MS, MT, ND, NE, NM, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI, WV, and WY.
  2. $108,896 - $145,195 in these states: CO, HI, MI, MN, NC, NH, NV, OR, and RI.
  3. $114,082 - $152,109 in these states: AK, CA, CT, DC, DE, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, TX, VA, and WA.
