Position Overview:
As an Entry Writer, you will ensure compliance with federal and foreign regulations governing the shipment, receipt, and documentation of imported products while processing separate entries to Customs Border Patrol (US CUSTOMS). You will also compute tariffs (taxes), and price conversions of merchandise imported from foreign destinations. In addition, you will also be asked to examine various documents, including invoices, bills of lading, and shipping statements, to obtain the release of incoming freight and resolve delays.
Job Description:
- Participates in planning and directing traffic flow to/from foreign destinations.
- Effectively classifies dutiable import/export shipments to ensure compliance with all government agency rules and regulations.
- Processes all requests for extensions, expiration, cancellation, and all government entries.
- Communicates with origin and destination locations regarding shipment status and special handling and delivery processes.
- Applies for Import/Export Permits and Certificates of Eligibility.
- Maintains an open line of communication with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
- May receive and distribute all incoming and outgoing mail and correspondence.
- Examine online commercial invoices and other documents to determine the correct Harmonized Tariff Code for each commodity to ensure correct classification.
- Knowledge of US Customs Regulations regarding Foreign Trade Agreements and other duty exemptions.
- Process shipments through online portals for submission to FDA and US Customs to obtain proper clearance.
- Receives freight, documentation, and way billing; assesses charges; and collects shipment fees.
- Opens a file on the dedicated software system for each shipment received.
- Responds to inquiries by fax, e-mail, or telephone.
- Negotiates with domestic customers as an intermediary for foreign customers to resolve problems and arrive at mutual agreements.
- Examines invoices and shipping manifests for conformity to tariff and customs regulations.
- Prepares manifests to accompany shipments.
- Notify consignees of delays in the shipment departure. Provides PODs to shippers if requested.
- Examines documents such as invoices, bills of lading, and shipping statements to verify the conversion of merchandise weights or volumes into systems used by another country.
- Converts foreign currency figures into United States monetary equivalents or domestic currency into foreign equivalents.
- Calculates duties or tariffs to be paid on merchandise.
- Corresponds with foreign companies.
- Prepares entry papers from shipper's invoice in accordance with U.S. Customs Service regulations and regulations of other federal agencies bearing on the importation of goods such as the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration.
- Files papers with Customs Service and arranges for payment of duties.
- Quotes duty rates on goods to be imported.
- Contact customs officials to effect the release of incoming freight and resolve customs delays.
- Itemizes charges, prepares freight bills, accepts payments, and issues refunds.

Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (associate degree preferred).
- 1 year of experience in transportation or customs preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
