The department invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position. We seek an empiricist with a strong foundation in interpersonal and/or organizational communication who utilizes quantitative, qualitative, or a mixed method approach to research. The ideal candidate would have a research and teaching focus in areas such as social influence, organizational or mediated messages, strategic communication, risk communication, communication and technology, or science communication. The position would begin Fall 2025.
Candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service as well as candidates who possess a deep interest in teaching. Educational Requirements for the Position:
Candidate should have a Ph.D. (in hand prior to start date) in Communication Studies. Experience Required for the Position:
Required teaching includes courses such as strategic communication, risk communication, culture & theory and applied communication. University-level teaching experience is desirable. Experience in online teaching is a positive qualification. The teaching load is three courses per semester including graduate teaching. Other Requirements for the Position:
Candidate should have a record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications that strongly indicates future success in scholarly research, evidence of excellent teaching, a record of service, and the ability to teach courses that will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Where appropriate, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance the research mission of Sam Houston State University through pursuit of internal and external funding, strategic development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships. Our department offers both a BA and BS in Communication Studies and an online MA in Communication Studies with a strong interpersonal communication focus. The department prepares students for a variety of fields, including teaching at all levels, public advocacy, public relations, governmental relations, and law. The department also offers an innovative communication research lab that supports a variety of faculty research programs.
