Position Summary:
The System Design Engineer works with Construction to design the layouts of future projects and assists with process coordination and optimization in whatever capacity is necessary. This role also acts as an intermediary between Business Development and Construction, ensuring that sold sites are constructable and constructable sites are sold. The position requires a deep understanding of power distribution, system integration, and regulatory compliance to ensure high-performing and scalable solutions.
Responsibilities: Design and develop EV charging station layouts, electrical infrastructure, and power distribution systems. Coordinate with local utilities and contractors to construct and maintain a comprehensive, multi-state electric vehicle fast-charging network within a constrained time frame. Collaborate with electrical engineers, project managers, and installation teams to ensure feasibility and efficiency of designs. Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies to determine optimal placement and system requirements. Develop technical specifications, schematics, and system diagrams for new and existing charging station projects. Verify and implement installation requirements in accordance with guidelines from local utilities, municipal governments, and the National Electric Code. Utilize digital modeling programs such as Aurora & SketchUp to generate site plans for sales and construction reference. Maintain open lines of communication between Francis Energy departments and local Authorities Having Jurisdiction to foresee and mitigate potential construction delays. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols. Optimize system performance through data analysis, load management strategies, and energy efficiency improvements. Work closely with suppliers and vendors to select appropriate components and equipment. Support troubleshooting efforts and provide engineering guidance for system-related issues. Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in EV charging infrastructure design.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field. 3+ years of experience in system design, electrical engineering, or infrastructure development. Strong knowledge of power distribution, energy storage, and renewable energy integration. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Aurora, or SketchUp. Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, UL, and other industry standards related to EV charging. Experience with load analysis, site planning, and permitting processes. Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Passion for sustainability and the advancement of clean energy solutions.
Preferred Qualifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification. Experience in EV charging infrastructure or renewable energy projects. Knowledge of software-based energy management and grid integration solutions. Familiarity with smart grid technology and IoT applications in EV charging.
