Job Description Summary: The Department of Music at TSU invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to serve as string faculty and Director of Orchestra. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and visionary conductor to lead and elevate our string and orchestral program.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting the TSU String Orchestra
  • Providing applied lessons for string-instrument students
  • Providing expert instruction in undergraduate conducting, orchestral repertoire, and related seminar classes

This role encompasses fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning environment, mentoring aspiring string performers, and nurturing the artistic growth of our students.

Beyond the podium, the Director will play a pivotal role in:

  • Shaping the future of our orchestral area through strategic recruitment initiatives
  • Active engagement with the broader music community
  • Collaborative partnerships with faculty in applied instrumental instruction, music education, and conducting

Administrative responsibilities include:

  • Budget management
  • Concert scheduling
  • Venue coordination

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate in Music, completed by August 2025
  • A minimum of three years of university-level orchestral conducting experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and conducting
  • Proficiency in teaching applied lessons in violin or another string instrument
  • Experience in advising, committee service, and other faculty responsibilities
  • A clear vision and proven ability to execute successful recruitment strategies
  • Exceptional oral and written communication, organizational, and administrative skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a compelling vision for future creative work and/or performance activity
  • Experience in mentorship and fostering student growth
  • Established connections with public school educators and ensembles
  • Engagement and experience in community outreach and community-oriented ensembles

  • A teaching statement outlining your recruitment strategies and pedagogical methods for conducting students
  • A recent (within the last five years) 20–30-minute digital video recording of an orchestral rehearsal
  • A 20–30-minute digital video recording of recent performance(s) conducted by the applicant
  • A repertoire list of works conducted
  • Three printed programs of full concerts, conducting and/or performances

Hiring Range: $52,592.60 - $68,370.00
