Customs Entry Writer

Location: Manhattan, NY / Jamaica, NY

Reports to: Customs Compliance Manager / Operations Manager

Role Overview:

The Customs Entry Writer is responsible for preparing and submitting accurate customs entries for import shipments, ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations. This position requires expertise in customs documentation, tariff classifications, and international trade compliance to ensure the timely clearance of goods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit accurate customs entries for import shipments, ensuring compliance with all U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations.
  • Review and analyze import documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading, to ensure correct tariff classification and valuation.
  • Collaborate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and timely clearance of shipments.
  • Resolve discrepancies or issues related to customs entries, liaising with CBP and other regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor and update shipment statuses in CargoWise or relevant systems to track and record customs-related information.
  • Stay current with customs regulations, tariff schedules, and trade compliance requirements to ensure accuracy in documentation.
  • Assist in preparing and submitting monthly reports on customs entries, duties, taxes, and related costs or discrepancies.
  • Support the Customs Compliance Manager with audits, inspections, and other compliance-related activities.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with clients, vendors, and CBP to ensure efficient import operations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelors degree in International Business, Logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience as a Customs Entry Writer, Customs Broker, or in a related role in logistics and freight forwarding.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, tariff classification, and the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).
  • Experience with CargoWise, SAP, or other customs compliance software platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal teams and external regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to ensure timely and accurate clearance of shipments.
