Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Ensemble Librarian for Mason Gross School of the Arts Music Department. This position reports to the Sr Department Administrator and works closely with the Orchestra Director, other Large Ensemble directors, and the Large Ensemble Administrative Coordinator.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

Music Preparation and Distribution:

  • Prepares orchestral parts for rehearsal and performance including transferring bowings, improving page turns, repairing parts, and correcting errata.
  • Communicates with conductor to confirm bowings and add rehearsal markings as needed.
  • Oversees distribution of music at rehearsals and concerts.
  • Tracks receipt and return of rehearsal parts from each orchestra member.

Music Library Administration:

  • Organizes physical library space. Ensures music is in good order and accessible.
  • Submits requests to replace damaged music and purchase new acquisitions to improve collection.
  • Works with on-going orchestral library digitization and cataloging projects.
  • Makes recommendations for storage improvements, relocation and reorganizing of collections.
  • Trains and supervises graduate student workers in bowings, scanning and copying of music parts and folder preparation.
  • Works on other projects as assigned related to the orchestras and other large ensemble areas.

Music Procurement:

  • Creates and manages a schedule of music rentals/purchases required for the RSO, Sinfonia and Helix seasons.
  • Communicates with large ensemble conductors to confirm editions, versions, and instrumentation of programmed repertoire.
  • Conducts research on current available editions to recommend the highest quality and most cost-effective options.
  • Submits specific purchase/rental requests to the Large Ensemble Administrative Coordinator.
  • Works with the Large Ensemble Administrative Coordinator to ensure that music is ordered in time to be received at least four weeks before the first scheduled rehearsal date.
  • Communicates with Large Ensemble Administrative Coordinator regarding additional performance or licensing elements (choreography, narration, recording).
  • Follows up with music publishers when needed to ensure timely delivery. Prepares rental materials for return to publisher by deadline specified in rental agreement.

Position Status: Hours Per Week 19.5

Position Salary: $25/hr.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music performance, or an equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as ensemble librarian at the conservatory or professional orchestra level.
  • Experience as an orchestral musician.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Significant knowledge of orchestral repertoire, ability to read, understand, and transpose an orchestral score.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, exercise good judgement.
  • Strong research skills and knowledge of orchestra library resources for repertoire, editions, and performance practice.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to interact with students, staff, faculty, conductors, and guest artists in a professional manner.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to work flexible hours if needed for rehearsals and/or performances.
  • Ability to lift heavy scores and parts up to 25 lbs.
