School Library Teacher

JOB DESCRIPTION: La Academia’s School Librarian will develop students’ information/media skills and knowledge through library and technology curriculum; collaboration with classroom teachers; maintenance and growth of the building library facility, including the Makerspace area(s).

REPORTS TO: Director of Middle School & Elementary Dean of Curriculum and Instruction

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging instructional technologies to support teaching and learning, engage students, and improve learning while providing 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community;
  • Manage, develop, and deliver creative and innovative library/maker programming in an innovative environment;
  • Collaborate and assist teachers and staff in planning for the use and integration of the full range of emerging technologies and digital curriculum;
  • Identify informative and entertaining programs on a variety of topics that fit within District goals related to the maker culture and involving our makerspaces;
  • Provide access to creative technology such as Computer Aided Design workstations, 3-D printers, robotics, electronics kits, etc.;
  • Utilize hands-on learning and collaboration in support of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) content and resources;
  • Support student achievement of state reading standards and foster student recreational reading;
  • Develop and maintain a collection of, and provide access to media that support the curriculum and the instructional programs of the District;
  • Maintain computerized circulation system and catalog database;
  • Instruct students at all grade levels in: library organization, reading as a lifetime activity, locating information, and utilizing information;
  • Interact with local public librarian(s) to coordinate assignments and support reading programs;
  • Participate in library budget development and purchasing;
  • Provide and/or plan professional development opportunities in the use of new technologies and school library services within the school and/or district for staff, including other school librarians;
  • Perform other classroom responsibilities and all other duties as assigned and/or stated in our Employee Handbook.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL:

  • Prioritize life-long learning and be driven to improve their instructional practice to continue their professional and personal development as an educator;
  • Take a Responsive Classroom approach to classroom behavior and promote restorative practices among students as a community member;
  • Partner constructively with all staff and parents to fulfill our school mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Delaware License and School Library Specialist Certification in required areas in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1580;
  • Successful completion of Praxis II exams;
  • 1-2 years of teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level with a master’s degree in School Library Media or related degree in the social studies field;
  • Additional qualifications and/or alternatives as deemed necessary by the Board of Education and School Administration;
  • Must be able to stand and work continuously for a minimum of 4 hours per workday;
  • Minimum lifting requirements- 50 pounds (with assistance);
  • Must be able to use arms and hands without restrictions to accommodate the physical, mobility, and ambulatory needs of students continuously for a minimum of 4 hours per workday.

SALARY & BENEFITS: This is a Full-Time 10-Month position. Salary range is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Health, Dental and Vision benefits are included.
